The year approaching is 2003.
Our actions and speech have been changed by world events. Corporate scandal, terrorist actions, and impending war have cast a cloud of doubt over what the future holds. Patriotism has a new meaning. Protests against the government that were once seen as mere freedoms of speech are now criticized by the pundits as dangerous and unpatriotic. Society is changing in front our eyes, and not for the better. Cities are decaying, groups are mobilizing, and third graders are getting busted with the intent to sell marijuana. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting much poorer.
The year approaching is 2003.
The Republicans have officially taken control and they’ve got a plan in place. The plan always starts with a slogan. All of the banners proclaim "United We Stand!" It continues with a new Department of Homeland Security that promises to protect us by combining efforts of government agencies to "assess threats to the homeland, to map those threats against vulnerabilities, and then to act to secure America." (George W. Bush, 7-26-02). News reports and lists of suspects in the post office help to keep the citizens informed. Systems like TIPS let us participate. What’s the next step in the plan?
The year approaching is 2003 or is it really 1984?
