A little overboard
I'm part of a large volunteering organization on campus and we recently held our board of directors meeting.
A resolution passed that we cannot participate in ANY activity that serves open alcohol. However, if it is "associated with" alcohol we would need exec board approval. There was a long discussion about what "associated with" meant but basically if you went to TGIFriday's with your committee you would need exec board approval because they serve alcohol there. And exec board approval cannot be granted the day of, it would need to be two weeks in advance.
I know alcohol is a delicate subject but needing prior approval to meet at a restaurant because they serve alcohol is a bit much IMHO. What do you think?

Sounds like a power-happy board. This goes way too far.

I was thinking overly sensitive, you might be right though! It kind of seems like asking permission from your parents!

We might both be right. Being sensitive to your organizations public image is important, but permission to go to TGI Fridays or other establishments in this class is silly. A lot of business gets done in places like these daily.
The power-happy part, to me, is the "you've gotta let us know two weeks in advance, so we can debate -- or whatever.
Even parents don't need that long to make a decision.

Your board is nuts. I guess they think that all the parents who take their kids to TGIFriday's are endangering their children because they might be near alcohol.
"Associated with" would be if your org participated as a group in the Coors Light Campus Sports Challenge, or something of the like.

Definitely over the top. Just because you're going to a restaurant that *serves* alcohol, doesn't mean you will be *drinking* alcohol to excess - or, actually, at all.
Now, if a bunch of you walked into TGI Friday's all wearing T-shirts with your org's name on it and proceeded to get $h!tfaced, I could see the board getting upset...

I don't think I could stand to be a member of a group that was so stringent. Props to you.

This is actually the second board meeting that I have attended (board memebers switch at semester) and I will not have officially started until January. This aspect of the organization was not highlighted during the application process and I'm actually really shocked about this.
It seems like the goals of volunteerism gets lost in this level of control.

I am amazed at this! You're not even in the "Bible Belt".
Just so all are clear, this is NOT AXO!!!
Is this org affiliated with any religious group like BSU or something???
