I'll bet this is true in most places...good news
From the Ohio University Post...
Greek life students produce high GPAs
by Alyssa Mitchell
Staff Writer
When people think of “greek life,” they most likely think of parties, formals, brotherhood and sisterhood. However, Ohio University greeks can be associated with something else: good grades.
According to the OU Fraternity and Sorority Academic Performance Report for Spring Quarter 2002, the average OU student grade point average was 2.992, while the average OU greek GPA was 3.038.
The fraternity with the highest GPA was Delta Lambda Phi, and the sorority with the highest GPA was Sigma Kappa.
Delta Lambda Phi Prospective Pledge Master Matt Hoch said high GPAs might be attributed to the small amount of members in his fraternity. Delta Lambda Phi has five members. “We all support each other,” he said.
And Sigma Kappa President Andrea Wilson said they have study tables and incentive programs to encourage good grades.
“We stress time management,” she said. “A lot of people in the house have the same major also, which is conducive to studying.”
Chad Lanman, vice president of Scholastics for OU’s Interfraternity Council, said in general you have to maintain a 2.5 GPA to be involved in greek life, but it varies between chapters.
“Everyone helps each other out,” he said. “Most chapters offer tutoring to their members and some chapters give out scholarships.”
Lanman also verified that the statistics were compiled from social fraternities and sororities, and did not include chapters such as the engineering or business fraternities.
He also said there is an academic awards banquet each spring for the fraternity and sorority chapters.
Compared with some other schools in the MAC, OU fares well against Bowling Green State University. According to the BGSU Spring 2002 Greek Executive Summary, the average greek GPA is 2.85, falling just below the BGSU student average of 2.9.
But Miami University pulls a bit ahead of OU in Greek GPAs.
According to the Miami 2002 Spring Semester Fraternity and Sorority Grade Reports, the average greek GPA is 3.11.
Miami University IFC Vice President of Judicial Affairs Bryan Holmes said high GPAs could be related to the type of people who choose to be in greek life; people who want to be involved.
“Most people I see in these organizations seem to have it on the ball,” he said.

Good for them. Wish we could do that- our men's average is 2.8, and our IFC average is 2.6. (The women are also below average, but I don't know the numbers.)

Quick question, who verifies Grades for you guys, the school? I wish we had GPA awards at my school, it would be a great recruitment tool, because the fear of lowering your grades is a big ditterent for a lot of peole joining.

DeltaAlum, thank your posting on this!
My Chapter requires a 2.5 to be initiated and stay an Active!
What most do not think about is the overall School GPA!
Yes, tehre are some that have higher, but not the average!
Greeks are always higher for a social group against the Norm!
Why dosnt the schools realize this>>?
We have higher standards to live by!
WE ARE GREEKS!

Our men must be above all-men's average to be initiated. Fortunately all-mens is ALWAYS pretty well below all-fraternity.
I think that's similar in most schools.

Now, if there was only a social life in Oxford. And who ever heard of holding study tables at Those preppy clothing stores?
Sorry, Shelley, just couldn't resist.

Yes they do. At OU the school gets all the grades and gives them to the IFC and WPA about a week after. The chapters are really close together grade-wise too because every chapter has really really well put together scholarship programs, and we love knowing that even though all the nongreeks think we do is party we still do better academically

What do you do if your system's GPA is lower than the all-women's or all-men's? It's that way at my school (as it was too when I was in school). Granted, it's a pretty "nerdy" campus where a lot of people care about their grades, but that also means it doesn't help convince people to go Greek if they're worried that their grades will drop. Only 6 of the 17 fraternities are above the all-men's, and 2 of the 4 sororities. So what are other campuses doing differently?

Well for one thing in our chapter you won't be initiated fully unless your GPA excedes all-men's. Once you've established good habits, it's hard to go back.

i think it's a mantality you have to form within the sisters and brothers. for me, i wasn't even allowed to join certain sororities b/c my gpa was too low when i rushed. sigma kappa overlooked the grades issue and took me anyways, but i had mandatory study table hrs every week while i was pledging. after i was initiated, if i was able to get my gpa up to the acceptable level then i was allowed off of study tables. for me though, study tables helped me keep up my gpa so i was always on them regardless. get your scholarship chairman to look into it.

Well, I'm not an active anymore! And my chapter was always above the all-women's. I'm talking about systemwide, not just working within one GLO.
