Motivation as a Chapter

I need some ideas for organized scholarship activities. We already have the highest GPA, so the girls already know what works for themselves. What are some good motivators, contests, rewards, ideas of any kind?

How about a raffle for a semester's worth of books? I got this idea from an E-Week event I went to last week. Each time a sister attends all classes/meets her goal on an exam or project/etc., her name goes in the drawing jar. A drawing is held at the end of the semester for the books.

That's a great idea equeen! god help them though if an english major wins it--I typically had like 40 books a semster. Maybe set a $300 limit or something on the books--that should cover just about everyone's book list.

Our XO chapter was very academically motivated--we were #1 GPA as well and all we really did was plan study hours and do something special in them--like pizzas, a sundae cart, stuff like that that the local alums would provide...it was all set up in the dining room all night long so we could wander in and munch and not have to eat the house food for once.

equeen-I suggested the idea this evening & it went over very well. I think we might make it more of a raffle, you when whatever gets put into the pot. Thanks a zillion for the great idea!

My chapter gives a discount on dues for brothers who make the dean's list, and we have an award every semester for the brother with the highest GPA - he gets an award, and his name is engraved on a plaque in the house.

Our Vice President, who is in charge of scholarship, passes around something called the 'A-quarium'. It's a small fish bowl which has tons of cute little fishies she cut out. Every week she passes it around and you put on one of the fish what you got an A in. Then at the end of the semester she'll see who got the most A's and they'll win a prize. We thought it was the cutest thing and a fun idea.
We also do a brag bag, which is passed around for sisters to brag about good grades and honors. Our former sisterhood chair went as far as to make beautiful yellow and red candles to give away for the top three each week. ALL the girls wanted one so we all made sure to do good on our assignments and test.

Ack, it doesn't really help for techie majors, either...three books cost me close to $400 this semester!!

Wow! Congrats on your scholastic achievements! Maybe you can throw them a "smarty party" to reward the chapter-make sure to invite the Greek Advisor and maybe some other folks from campus. Also, since your members are so highly motivated, you can plan a seminar for other members of the greek community, or athletics, or freshman, on how to keep organized and get good grades. Make sure your campus knows you are the smartest greeks there!

Our chapter did several things to promote academic excellence. Here are a few:

1) For every 4.0 average, a sister was given a pearl that was added to the guard of her DZ badge. This was done every semester (actually, quarter, since we were on the quarter system at the time). I'm proud to say that we had several girls with more than one pearl on their guards!

2) The A Bag - every week, the A bag was passed around in our chapter meeting and every girl got to put her name in the bag one time for every A she received in class that week. This counted for homework A's, research paper A's and test A's. At the end of the meeting, a name was drawn from the bag and the girl was given a certificate to be used for 2 free professional pictures from our next social event.

3) The Cut Can - at the beginning of our meeting, when role was called, each girl had to answer the role by counting off how many classes she had cut that week. For example, if you missed 3 classes, you had to stand and say "One, two, three". If you missed no classes, you stood and said "Lambda Pi" (our chapter name). Missing because you were sick does not count against you. The Cut Can was passed around at that time, and you had to put in a quarter for every class you missed. The money from the Cut Can was used to buy the pearls for the 4.0 girls at the end of the semester.

4) The girls with the most improved GPA and the highest GPA were each given certificates at the end of the semester and the chapter paid one month of their dues as their reward for doing so well.
