Should Alpha Men Step
Several local Greek organizations have sponsored step shows for graduate chapters. They utilize these events to raise money and promote local graduate chapters. A consideration for scoring is the age of participants in each fraternity or sorority. For example, if my chapter had 10 people stepping and four are age 40 plus then we garner an additional 20 points.
During the discussion of my chapter participation in such step shows statements made were: men of Alpha should focus their attention on other things, we are busy running companies, directing boards, etc. and should focus our attention on meaningful efforts. What are you thoughts? Should men of Alpha participate in step shows????

Now, Michael just remember you asked us to check out this post.
On a serious note, I don't see anything wrong with graduate chapter members participating in a step show every now and then. If members are willing to perform in a step show and have their act together, then go for it.
However, I would hope that step shows are never the primary focus of any undergrad or graduate chapter. Step shows play a unique role in the BGL experience, but it does not take the place of our organizations' focus.

I understand and agree with you! My brothers don't think that Alpha men should participate in these type of events. I don't agree with most of them. In fact, I would love to get out there and show many that I can still "shake it off"!!!!

I think all greeks should step. One, because it is a part of our history. Did you know that slaves started the greek steps?
They were the ones that were on the plantation clapping hands and stompin. Two, because it is a great way to bond with your bruhs or your sorors.
Just a little AKA note

I have to agree with the Sorors. Stepping not only build brotherhood, and uniformity, but it's a part of our history. My chapter steps everywhere and we take pride in our abilities,of course stepping is not our main focus, but we like to win and it's one of the easiest ways to bring money into a chapter. As far as graud brothers stepping, I'd actually love to see more grad brothers that do step, because it's also an easy and effective way to become visible in the community.

Hey, Alphas don't only run the world...we have fun too! I believe someone said in an earlier post that it builds unity and promotes Brotherhood! Alpha Phi Alpha is an ALL-PURPOSE organization, we are not stiffnecks! We get out there and do our thing to, and we perservere in winning too!

step show reform
I think these events are great---i.e. grad step shows. My chapter did it for a pan-hell picnc. Pratices were a riot. The snap-crackle and pop of bones was so frequesnt you'd think someone was eating rice crispies . Also, look at it as an opportunity to reform the concept of the "stepshow", you know show the young- uns how its really done. I remember when stepshows were family events. Now, it seems you can't get thru a show without a group partially undressing or simulating a sex act.

grad brothers stepping
Yes we should step, it's part of our history, it's part of the total greek experience. After college we want to forget the fun part of being greek. This is probably why we lose so many brothers in the transition from undergrad to grad, as we all know there are brothers who only pledged after going to a greek step show or after the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha step. We need to get out and show people that we can still have fun and enjoy ourselves.I think this is a good idea and I hope to bring it to my Grad chapter to sponsor such an event. The more gray hair the better and we will also have brothers do the same steps they did in undergrad and wear some of the same clothes. We can go all the way back through the years and offer an retrospect on stepping. ( In my days we called it Performing and we called step shows Greek Scenes )Imagine the brothers stepping in stack sole shoes and elephant bell pants with huge afros and the Sororities in Hot pants and halter tops or sizzlers.( browse through some old year books).
