Angry Just a vent...

There hasn't been much recently and I thought I'd start a little controversy... (sp?)

Since I have joined D Phi E, my sorority has won nothing except for one (!) 3rd place trophy for Blood in Greek Week and awards at Convention (where I know it matters most). I know that we should be proud of all of my chapter's accomplishments (and I am, trust me, I will sit down and tell you all about it) but sometimes it gets hard to remember all you accomplished. The younger sisters really really want to win something in Greek Week this year. Me and the other older sisters telling them that we win and succeed where it matters most is becoming a broken record. (I'm getting sick of saying it too.)

Does it seem at any other schools like the same sororities just reshuffle their placement any time an award is given out? Like for Greek Week or Derby Days or Paddy Murphy? I love my chapter and am really just venting.

I just came from a competition where another sorority won third place doing some of the most obscene things I have ever seen on a stage ever. (And the saddest part ever was that it was to a song that we considers OURS.) Yet they won third place and we placed fifth or sixth out of six. I don't think we should have placed that low - there was clearly a first and second place performace. However, there was a tie for third and somewhere in the shuffle, and another placed where they clearly shouldn't have. And also the obscene sorority placed.

Basically what I'm asking is if there exists a prejudice towards some sororities when it comes to competitions. I know I was taught to think this way as a new member and I've never seen any evidence to think otherwise. I've never seen two smaller houses paired up that have placed in any event ever - and I'm a senior! Basically I'm just frustrated and figured I would give everyone something to think about.

And on the gossip front, when I say obscene, I mean Christina-Aguilera-in-her-new-video obscene. Just throwing a gossip bone out there.

yay, Greek politics!

Sorry to crash your board but I know where you are coming from...

Greek Week at Clarion usually ended up being decent because they had impartial judges for things like Sing. Derby Daze was another story...gee, for some reason the sorority that all the Sigma Chi little sisters were in always won. My take on DD was it was just a chance to have big dumb fun and not get too worried about it. Pretty much no one else gave a crap either. We actually won one year when they had impartial judges - what does that tell you? If winning things like that is something that really effects rush, your standing on campus etc. I would lobby for them to change the judging system.

When I was in college, a fraternity would have a pledge star search type of competition. All of the pledge classes could perform on stage. Our pledges danced for the first two years and won both years. The third year a fraternity decided to do a spoof of our sorority winning. I didn't see it since I was in the real world, but it was pretty funny from what I have heard. Those guys won that year. We also had greek olympics and greek tournaments. Sometimes we won. Sometimes we did not. We had our ups and downs just like every other GLO.

These events are supposed to bring attention to the greek system, raise money for our philanthropies, and attract new potential members. Sometimes these competitions unfortunately bring out negativity and disappointment. Just remember the games are supposed to bring the greek system closer to each other. You should be having fun and not feeling bad. The best situation is to have impartial judges so that everything is fair. Having written that, I hope that you win the next time!

Hey...

take heart in this... that sorority had their NMs acting like harlots so that the guys would get all excited and vote for them...

At one of the schools a Chapter I advise is at, a member of a sorority posed for Playboy. At first, everyone wanted to mix with this sorority, and every girl wanted to join that sorority because of all the attention they got from their "Playmate" sister.

A year later, this sorority can't get any new members. You want to know why? They have a reputation as being slutty, and girls interested in joining a sorority don't want to be in one where they have to look like, or hang out with, Playmates.

I hope this makes you feel a little bit better!

E Phi
Kristen...who would never be in Playboy. But if I had the body for it, I would be in a bikini at all times. I'd have, like, fur ones for the winter...

Don't mean to crash your thread, but since i'm from that school, I know exactly what you mean!
I heard about what happened at comedy night from my roommate, who's still a collegian... somehow it's always a certain few houses that are obscene and classless.
Our campus especially seems bad. Personally, i'd rather not win anything than act like some of these houses do. Some of the bigger houses constantly do things that totally lack any class whatsoever, and it sickens me. One of the greek sing skits (moulin rouge i believe it was) also reminds me of this.
Do you remember last year at greek god and goddess? The question and answer period? I think the question was what's the most embarassing thing that ever happened to you. This particular girl proceeded to tell the story of how she was down in the basement of her house in high school with her boyfriend, and her mom came in and caught her on all fours having sex. If that would have been one of my sisters, her ass would've been brought to standards quicker than you could even say "sex". Plus the fact that it was also videotaped! Now if only one of those videotapes would make it to their advisors.
I know how fustrating it can be on our campus when the same few houses win everything. Thankfully, our house has gotten better at it. But the whole house really needs the attitude and competitiveness to win. We as a house get really competitive and pumped for some of the events. For instance, last year we won Paddy Murphy. A few of our sisters went nuts trying to gather cans, and in particular we wanted to beat a certain house on the ninth floor. So we went crazy. It was a blast, we had fun, we even added up all the weight of the cans that we collected just to make sure we didn't get ripped off.
I also think that sometimes the judging is shady at some of the competitions. For instance, I don't think the GSA for the greek office should ever be a judge. It's a little hard to be impartial to the house you just graduated from a year ago. Or for the fraternity events- i have several ideas about how people win them
How they do the pairings is also really shady at times it seems. For instance, why does SAE (who is crazy about Greek Sing) always gets one of the biggest houses? Then they pair up two of the smaller sororities with one or two of the smaller fraternities. How does that make sense?
Additionally, some of the houses spend a TON of money on this stuff- like greek sing. And while it would be nice, most of us don't have rich mommies and daddies to pay for elaborate costumes, etc.
My advice, that we tried to do, it just get out there and start participating in everything you can. Get competitive, but not bitchy competitive like some houses do. Make it fun to do, and girls will have more fun. It's really hard to say. It's been this way on campus forever....... good luck! If you ever want to rant about greek life at Pitt, give me a PM, i could go on all day. Sorry again for crashing your boards, but this is something that i definately have an opinion on!

Best wishes,
Danielle

PS- i really hope it wasn't my house that looked bad.... i don't think it would be, i know we did American Idol, but i didn't see it or hear a lot about it, just that it was funny.
