Alpha Gam Named Truman Scholar
Wow!! This woman is amazing!!
Julie Murray, Epsilon-University of Kentucky, has been awarded one of the most prestigious scholarships in academia history. The Truman Scholarship, named after former President Harry S Truman, is a graduate honor that is worth $30,000 towards post-bachelor’s degree study. The scholarship is given to students who plan on going into government, nonprofit work or education. Eligible students must have exceptional academic backgrounds in public service as well as outstanding leadership potential and communication skills.
Julie was persuaded to apply for this scholarship by a classmate in the Honor’s Program at the University of Kentucky. “When I learned I had been chosen, I was extremely excited and grateful. I have been given a lot of opportunities here that I would not have received anywhere else,” Julie said.
Along with being an active member of Alpha Gam, Julie is a Singletary Scholar, Gaines Fellow and an Ambassador for the College of Arts and Sciences. She now adds Truman Scholar to her growing list of achievements. Julie has studied in Spain and Italy and has interned with the West Virginia state government. She is currently interning with the local mayoral campaign in Lexington, Kentucky.
Julie is one of 70 college juniors around the country to win the national award and is the 11th Truman Scholar at the University of Kentucky. Along with local recognition, Truman Scholars are given priority admission and supplemental funding at premier graduate schools, leadership training, career and graduate counseling and special internship opportunities in the federal government.
Murray, a topical major in Public Policy, hopes to earn a joint law and master’s degree in Public Policy degree from the University of California-Berkley. Using her many skills, she would like to work for a women’s non profit organization such as the National Women’s Law Center.
