Here at WVU, the greek system really doesn't attract that many people. I think the biggest fraternity has maybe 60 members...and that's including the pledges in the count and inactives.
The Beta chapter here has 41 brothers. Our average pledge class is between 10 and 15, with usually at least 2-5 pledges being balled or quitting in the process.
One problem we have, I think, is our location. There are two main streets for fraternities here. One is called 'Frat row' which is right behind the Student Union and really close to campus. They are right there in the face of all the freshman and anyone else interested in going greek. The other street is perpendicular to Frat row, but it's up on top of a hill and quite a way to walk. Most people don't even know about the 'top of the hill' fraternities.
We have adjusted our recruitment in some ways, mostly by recruiting through organizations that brothers are already part of. I know myself and about four other brothers were recruited from ROTC.
This semester there are some other changes occuring. The greek council has came up with a new plan for rushing. They are going to have buses pick up all those that are interested and spend one day on the top of the hill and another down on frat row. I think this will help out a lot because when people see our house, they fall in love with it and a it will get a lot more people up here to see what we have to offer.
