BERKELEY, Calif. (KGO) -- A 45-year-old Dublin man was in court on Friday facing charges related to breaking into a sorority house at UC Berkeley and watching women shower.
"This was a terrifying set of events. This happened Halloween night, early Nov. 1 morning," says Officer Byron White with the Berkeley Police Department.
Officer White says Berkeley police got a call around 6 a.m. of a suspicious man inside a UC Berkeley sorority house - Alpha Chi Omega.

How terrifying! A man broke into the KD house at UVA approximately 2 years ago now and actually touched a woman who was sleeping. Same situation, lax security, leaving windows open, etc.

Some kid broke into the DG/KD dorm when I was at Mississippi State and was caught watching women shower. He was maybe 13 years old.

According to the article, he wandering in and out of the house for THREE HOURS. And according to KTVU news, "Other residents of the home said they had seen the suspect inside the home as early as 3 a.m." One member said she saw him peeping her in the shower. How do you see a random middle aged man creeping inside the sorority house at 3am, and watching you shower, and not scream and call 911?
Oh and, by the way, he has a pending charge from January 2024 for lewd acts on a child.

It's pretty crazy nobody said anything sooner. The only theory I can come up with is the idea of "keep quiet and don't cause drama" is pretty ingrained in a lot of us. So maybe the woman who saw him when she was in the shower just caught a quick glimpse of him, not enough time to gauge that he was not an 18-22 year old, and assumed he was there with someone who lives in the house (yes, I know most houses have rules against that sort of thing, but let's not pretend it never happens). She didn't want to risk the embarrassment of waking up the whole floor because someone's boyfriend/hook-up was in the bathroom.
Sort of along the lines of how sometimes child abuse is observed by neighbors, but not reported, because people don't want to take the risk that they are wrong and cause the parents to be arrested and/or kids to be removed based on their own actions.

This situation reminds me of the Bryan Kohberger case out of Idaho. One of the surviving roommates saw an unknown man walking past as he exited in the middle of the night. She and the other surviving roommate texted each other, tried texting the now deceased roommates to see if they were ok, and eventually huddled up together in the same room for hours. They seemingly perceived something wasn't right, but no one actually went upstairs just to take a quick walk through. It was hours before the deceased roommates were located upstairs and 911 was called. It's interesting how people will rationalize what they saw.
