What do you think about this?

Officials at Vanderbilt University have decided, after three years of debate, to change the name of a student dormitory there because the word "Confederacy" in its current name might offend some students, reports the Vanderbilt Hustler.

Michael Schoenfeld, vice chancellor of public affairs, said Confederate Memorial Hall will henceforth be known simply as Memorial Hall.

Associate Vice Chancellor of Student Life Steve Caldwell said, "The word Confederate makes many people uncomfortable. This is the right thing and it needs to be done."

The United Daughters of the Confederacy donated money to build Confederate Hall in 1935 in an attempt to improve economic and educational problems in the South. Female descendants of Confederate veterans were offered a rent-free stay at the residence hall, provided they studied education and brought their talents back to better the South.

Maybe they should change the name of their newspaper too because it shares a name with a porn magazine.

Officially changing the name of the building isn't going to do anything to remove the word Confederacy from student vocabulary. We still call the Sinfonia house "Sabin" and the Language house "Swing," even though they've been different for years.

KappaKittyCat, how true! Think how we've ALL tried to delete rush and pledge and for some-frat from our vocabulary. Kind of difficult to say the least!

The UDC donated the money for the building 67 years ago. They paid for right to name the building whatever they wanted. If it is not to be named the Confederate Memorial Hall, then the UDC should be the group allowed to rename the building.

Just my opinion...

If the UDC donated the money for the building then they should have the name remain.

It isn't that hard to change names in people's minds though. During my sophomore year, one of our dorms was changed from New West Hall to Taylor Hall after Kathryn Taylor, the wife of our then-President. It was hard at first and alot of people called it New West but now two years later, no one even remembers the old name anymore.

Relative became President when Lincoln was Killed and He was from Tenn.

It was not a slavery war as some beleive, but an Economic War!

A few years ago at LSU, someone decided that a restaurant on campus, the Plantation Room should be renamed, claiming that the name was racist and offensive.

Its now named the Magnolia Room.

Everyone who was here then still calls it the Plantation Room.

the thing i cannot stand with many in this great country of ours is that being politically correct has become so important. changing a name b/c it could offend people is dumb. this notion that we as a culture need to try to please everyone and not do anything to offend others has gone too far and is just quite sad. im not saying people should go out of there way to offend, thats just wrong, but if its a part of our history then it needs to be recognized. this is just like the story i saw on the oreilly factor that a nyc counilman wants to take down pictures of thomas jefferson in city hall b/c he was a slave owner and b/c of that, those pictures could be offending to some. you know what, he may have owned slaves and thats not a good thing, but he still did a lot for this country and should be recognized for that as well. bottom line, all this politically correct b.s. needs to end. and thats my little rant for the day

Oy. I get so tired of this stuff sometimes. If we keep on going like this, we're going to get to the point where we're afraid to open our mouths in public because we *might* offend someone.
