on line for abc and now a member of xyz?
Hello everyone, this is traci and I have another question. It has always been my understanding that once you have officially shown interest in a BGLO, you are pretty much marked for that one or nothing. Why is it that I was reading the D-9 and there was a person in it who was on line for abc and dropped, and then years later became an honorary member of xyz? Is this a common occurence? Peace and Blessings Traci

I can't say that it's common, but it does happen from time to time. That's all I'm going to say.

I really think that people should be able to attend all interest meetings if they're deciding, and not be lableled as interested in that particular group. At my undergrad, if you even attended someone else's program, you were labeled for that particular group. However,...
when someone goes so far as to start a process for another organization, and then tries to show interest in another, I don't think that is appropriate. I know when "certain" sororities at my undergrad were suspended, the other two sororites would see an increase in people at their interest meetings and programs.
I don't think that is appropriate either because it seems as if the person just wants somebody's letters, but no specific love for any particular org.

I also read the story to which you refer. This does happen from time to time...you decide to pledge yourself to join one group. Things happen, and you never initiated, or dropped the process. You left the whole GLO thing alone, and later you become interested again, but this time inspired by a different group or individual within that new group. While I think it was in extremely poor taste to discuss it in a book (it's your business how or why you became a member, not mine. I just wanna know what you're doing with your letters now that cha got 'em), I don't think this is such a major crime unless you became an initiated member. I've known some of the best members of various BGLOs (at least one in each of the D9) to be folks who were initially "on-line" or "interested" in an organization, and that organization betrayed their trust or it didn't work out. They later joined another, and they haven't looked back. But again, they also don't put that information on front street, which is how it should be.
We have the capacity to be wrong in choosing careers, majors, mates, friends...I don't think it's that far of a stretch to assume that there are some folks who initially chose the wrong BGLO too. It's frowned upon by many, but it indeed happens.
I'm glad that I chose the RIGHT one though!
