It means the sorority invited you to their preference party. Preference is the last and most serious night of rush and is generally when rushees and sororities make their final decisions.
Hope that helped!

OK, I think I understand how pref night, and the lists, and the bids, and all that work. But I still don't understand what it means to be preffed by a particular sister. And can that happen before rush even starts? At a party, a friend was introducing me to girls in her house, and her boyfriend joked that I was being preffed already. Since I thought that happened at the end of rush, I'm a little confused.

I think you were being rushed by a certain girl, not preffed. Preffing does occur at the end of rush, and it's not done by just one girl. After you go the Pref Party you go and sign which houses you want to belong to. If you're matched up with the other houses (say you put XYZ 1st and XYZ put you 1st) then you get a bid.

When you are prefed by a sorority member, it refers to the sister who talked to you at the Preference party/ceremony. "Prefing" can only happen at the final event, Preference, which is where the nickname "Pref" comes from. If it is anytime before that, it should be said that you are being "rushed" by a member.
Side Note: is there a new PC term for being "rushed"?
