Soroity Quotas?????
What amazes me is that no Fraternitys have quotas!
We Rush as best as we can! We Stand On Our Own! Lose or Draw, we are there in the good times and bad!
But Yet Soroitys have controll of who is so on campus! By that I mean, well so and so did not reach fullfilment for recruitment! Well we cannot allow anyone else on as the Soroitys did not reach Status!
My School has not reached rush expectations so no one else can Charter there!
It is BS as Maybe I do not like the 3 Soroitys on campus and want to become a member of another! No You Cannot!
It is self importance and egotisim!
Is that Democracy NOPE!???!!!!!
It is BS, get over your requring quotas, and Recruit for what you mean and stand for! You are holding the Greek System Back to the Middle Ages!
You Stand and Mean for what You are! Live or die with it!
SO DO YOU HAVE THE GUTS!
Pass this along to the NPHC and anyother International!
You as an Organization are Holding the Greek Movement Back!

Whoa there, Tom... I don't know if you really understand all that's involved in setting quota.
One of the reasons that Panhellenic sets quota is to prevent the larger houses from completely dominating Rush. It allows the smaller houses on campus, who maybe haven't been around as long and/or had the chance to build their reputation up as much, to have a better shot at picking up quality girls.
If you had no set quota, then the smaller houses may die out and make the Greek system smaller on campus. In addition, the larger houses would potentially become too large. Just imagine if everyone going through Rush wanted to be an XYZ because they supposedly have the "best rep" on campus. With no quota, XYZ could accept as many girls as it wanted. Could you imagine girls trying to get to know more than 200 women in their chapter? It would be impossible to really bond with such a large group, and it would be VERY difficult to plan activities with such a large number.
This is just the tip of the iceberg concerning the need for quota, but I hope it helps you to understand Panhellenic's motives a little better.

I think that Tom's point!
Lord help me, I'm starting to understand Tom!
Supply and Demand
Fraternity rush obeys it. Sorority rush does not.
NPC is practically a monopoly...or maybe it's an oligopoly (crap, can't remember how to spell or even correct definitions. damn it. i have been out of school too long. sorry. tangent.)
Anyways, with the fraternity system some chapters will be little while others dominate. But how many fraternity pledges do you hear about being forced into chapters??? Not too damn many. And when's the last time you heard a fraternity complain that the rush system screwed them over. Like NEVER!!!
Unfortunately, the fraternity system would be the kiss of death for a lot of NPC collegiate chapters. Heck, even some nationals could fold if it was implemented. But honestly, I think that if it had been implemented from the get go, it would have been great.

we actually have no quota (since greeks are't recognized at good ol' uml) and i find girls are pretty evenly distributed through the "big 3" anyway.. the small local sorority on campus is folding, but thats okay because they cause LOTS of problems..

I dont buy the reasons for quota. Fraternities don't have quotas and you dont see one fraternity taking over and the small groups dying out. It is actually the opposite. On most campuses there are twice as many fraternities as sororities.

I have many, let's just say "questions," about the way sororities do rush. But I am on the INSIDE of the process, I know how it works, and I've seen it work. I have a right to criticize. Guys who come in and say, "You should do it OUR way" don't carry any weight with me. I'm not going to tell a guy - unsolicited! - "Your rush system is wrong because x--------." If they don't like their system - or if men who rush but don't join don't like the system - they are the ones to change it. Not me.
So butt out, guys!
I'm not saying you don't have a right to your opinions - we're all allowed to have opinions on whatever topics we please - but what do you hope to achieve by complaining about our system? Do you think the president of the NPC will read your post and say, "Gosh, I never thought of it that way, we'd better change our system of rush?"

Madmax and Tom,
I'm saying this with Greek Love to both of you...
The NPC concept of Rush is something that will always be difficult for members of the opposite sex to understand simply because they've never experienced it for themselves. It's just one of those things. My brother, for example, thinks NPC Rush is the stupidest thing he's ever heard of, and believes that we're crazy to not conduct our rush the same way that his fraternity does theirs. So, I can see where you're coming from... I know that y'all love the way that fraternities rush and consider it to be the easiest and best method to pledge new members. Quite honestly, I think it is really successful, too -- for men. Women are just different in the way that we go about things, and what's good for the guys isn't always good for us. I know that sounds elementary, but that's really what it all comes down to.
Don't debate the merits of grass vs. astroturf with me, and I won't debate the merits of NPC Rush vs. IFC Rush with you.

things that make ya go hmmmmmmmm...he's got a point here. my last school had 14 sororities and 17 fraternities. my current school has 3 sororities and 5 fraternities. sure, some of the fraternities have 50 guys where another may have 10, but everybody is happy. go figure. i still don't think that we girls could figure it out if we didn't have so many rules. we'd have too much dirty rushing. lol.

From a women who has seen a campus give out bids just like the fraternities and then changed to NPC "bid matching" and quota system, Tom is right.
The system is not about mutual selection, it is about having total "control" of the process. If NPC women's fraternities really stood for mutual selection, then the alumnae intake process would mirror the collegiate process, but it does NOT.
Now, I do believe there is a place for bid matching, especially when there are hundreds of women participating in rush and being Greek is a positive thing on the campus.
However, I believe the whole "quota" thing should be tossed out the window! If a total size is set and enforced, then there is no need for a quote. Each sorority would only take enough new members each term to off-set the number of graduates from the previous semester.
Then
1. The bigger groups do not get bigger, if a group is at total then that's it -- no more bids for that term! It makes each individual group plan more, but every sorority is on the same footing.
2. Each group can say exactly how many members they will take at recruitment. Then, all PNMs know the true odds of getting into a particular group.
3. Eliminates the whole concept of dirty rushing. Everyone should be able to normally talk to other PNMs at any time about their sorority, it is the natural way to make friends! Our silent periods are probably what bugs fraternity men the most.
4. Eliminates the all the SIP and 1 year bid matching contract rules. A women should not feel forced to join a group.
5. Eliminates the complicated rules like, quota plus, snap bidding -- very few people understand quota, let alone anything else.
6. Enables the Panhel as a whole, to realize sooner when a new group needs to be added. So if 6 of 8 groups are always around total, and a group of 20 women want to start a new group, there is no reason not to let them start.

So fraternity rush is more like real life?
When you go for a job interview, do you have 30 minutes to impress them, or three weeks? Right, 30 minutes, and if you're lucky you're invited back to the next round of interviews.
Do companies just offer jobs to any qualified folks that come along? Nope, they only have so many openings.
Can you wear your dirty old jeans and ballcap to that interview? No way. You'd better be dressed up and looking spiffy.
I'm playing devil's advocate here, but my point is that you're never going to have to do anything that's really like rush, be it formal or informal, men's or women's, ever again once you graduate. It's an artificial system, as any system will be. I guess we could abolish rush altogether, and give bids to nice people we happened to meet, but I bet a lot of groups would be folding fast without some system.
So while you might not like the system, I think it's just silly to say that either system is just like real life. There are a lot more meaningful and legitimate criticisms that could be made.
