pins and Non-PHC sororities

Has this ever happened to anyone?

I was at work and spotted one of my friends from my major shopping. She was wearing a pin that didn't look like your every-day wear so I asked if she had joined a sorority this fall and which one. She replied "well, i am not supposed to say anything but I am pledging XYZ sorority." She joined a sorority that was not part of panhellenic... a cultural one, to be more specific.

This didn't make sense to me. I mean, this isn't the first time this has happened. (Another girl in one of my classes joined another non-PHC sorority and told me the same thing.) It's not a big deal to me if they don't wanna say... but she almost sounded ashamed to tell me. If you were part of an organization, wouldn't you be proud to say "I am a new member of ABC."

I am sure there is a good reason why new members can't say what they joined, but why would there be such a restriction?

Anyone?

Perhaps they're operating illegally or underground on your campus?

or maybe for their organization "pledging" and "new member" aren't the same thing. as such, if they go around telling everyone that they're pledging XYZ and don't get in, imagine the embarrasment of having to say to those same people that you didn't get in.

just a thought.

I have seen some wierd things . . .

For example with some NPHC groups or Mulri Cultural Groups . .. well lets just say that their intake programs are a lot harder than some of the mainstream groups .

So I was talking to one girl one time and she told me that only one girl made it out of this pledge class . .. 6 dropped.

When I asked her why they dropped she replied "Damn, that shits haarrddd!"

A lot of the above mentioned groups had a lot of drops . . .

I was talking to the Greek Advisor once and he was telling me that the NPHC and Multi Cultural groups had NO drops . . . I was like WTF? But I didn't say anything to him . . .

I did some research and I found out that a lot of those groups will pledge people in the semester before they register them as pledges. And then basically just sign them in the following semester. So it becomes important for pledges not to say something while pledging!

Sorry it was long winded I just wanted to give some background . . .

One of our local sororities does something similar to this. They're required to carry around this wooden book that they must wear slung over their body with their letters on it, but if anybody asks what is is they are supposed to say "I don't know what you're talking about, what's wrong with you?" It's really weird because obviously we all know it's a pledge book.

My organization asks that the new members wear pins. However, because some consider it hazing, they are NOT REQUIRED to wear them. Either way, they are never advised to keep their affiliation quiet.

Doesn't quite matter that they have the option to wear it or not, as far as I know, there hasn't been anybody who feels uncomfortable wearing the pin. As a matter of fact, in my charter, all the new members were looking forward to it.

I guess it just depends on the organization.
