Would participating in this pageant ruin my dream?

Ok. So, I did research, kept my GPA up, participated in other organizations on campus, did community service ect., made up my mind and followed my heart, and decided that I do; I want to be a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc.!!!

However, a good friend of mine who is a member of Phi Beta Sigma asked me to participate in their pageant next semester to become "Miss Phi Beta Sigma." Although I was quite flattered by the offer and opportunity, it had later dawned on me that this pageant may possibly interfere with my membership intake into the sorority of my dreams!

So ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha, How do you all feel about this situation? Would you or any of your sisters possibly hold it against a candidate who was associated with another Greek organization in this manner?

*crash*

I'm sorry, but what is the conflict here?

The conflict is basically one of loyalty. In doing research I learned that when a candidate is interested in a certain sorority, then they should only attend that sorority's events. I do not want to give the impression that I am interested in pledging Zeta Phi Beta by participating in Phi Beta Sigma's pageant.... I don't know how other organizations view these circumstances, but I know of BGLOs especially being really particular about certain things, and I would not like to jeopardize my chances in membership intake in any way.

The rules are still the same folks. For those that need a refresher, see our P. O. W.

LOL

I really wish the people who found answers to these questions in previous years passed the info down to the younger folks.

^^Yes. Barring that, if only there were a way to access the wisdom of the ages in this internet era. Perhaps a forum, where every thread for the past ten years has been meticulously archived. A place where one need only search to find the answer to almost every imaginable query. A place that would give any new aspirant all the tools they needed to proceed with their quest IRL and not on a message board. If only such a place existed.

You're welcome. I was particularly generous, if I don't say so myself. The question is are you going to take the help we gave or be sour because it was not the response you you thought we would give?

I remember asking FACE-TO-FACE questions as an aspirant and not always receiving clear answers in the desired package. Never would I return the favor because I knew that my sarcasm, perceived assholeness, and riddles aren't necessarily the same as theirs; and doesn't necessarily have the same purpose as theirs often had.

You're right "Dr. Phil"....jeez I feel like I'm being pre-pledged. Smh. I guess I shall start to practice humility from now...
I just think it would sound really dumb for me to ask a member 'face to face',
"I'm thinking of joining your org pretty soon, but I was wondering if you ladies would hold it against me if a participated in the Phi Beta Sigma pageant?"...you kno?

And I don't wanna ask the Sigma because he may mislead me, being that he would prefer me to pledge Zeta. THAT's why I decided to ask strangers....

This is why I always say BEFRIEND THE MEMBERS. You absolutely must have the skill of making friends with strangers -- that's how you get your questions answered face-to-face.

^^^ You beat me to it.

To the OP, if you don't have a single AKA on campus that you would feel comfortable having a frank (yet discreet) discussion with, do you think that you would be accepted into the organization later? It's possible but highly improbable, and I'm sure that's the case for all D9 orgs.

Merry Christmas, GC! Another entertaining thread out of the blue!

Bingo.

And, for those who didn't grasp this, don't just befriend people because you want to be a member because that's not genuine. Connect with people in a human sense and you'll find that you have a lot of things in common organizationally and in general. You will be introduced to a lot of people and find out a lot of information directly and indirectly.

Funny how the answer to almost every imaginable query boils down to this advice.
