A little upset...
I have a few questions about things going on in my chapter:
-Our installation of officers was tonite, and I had asked if I could perform the ceremony - being that we dont have an alumna avisor, and I am alum. Well our faculty advisor performed it. She is not an iniatied sister, and though I love her dearly, I dont think she should have been seeing our ritual. What are your thoughts?
-Ritual books, to be kept by Vice Archon, and not seen by anyone unless they are performing that part of a ceremony? I asked, and our past archon had said something along the lines of no one is allowed to look at them. Even sisters who just want a clearer view of the ritual... I think that is complete bullshit. I understand the VA keeping them, or even the Archon keeping them, but if a sister wants to read the damn thing cover to cover, I think she has a right to! We are all initiated sisters in the sorority!!!!!
What are your takes on these situations?

HI there,
Regarding the Ritual manuals. We were never told that only eboard members can see the ritual manuals. From what I understand any duly initiated sister can see our ritual manual.
As to the faculty advisor performing the installation of officers I think that is a HUGE no-no since she is not an initiated Phi Sig sister. She's not even supposed to be able to have access to the manuals and if she's performing the ceremony that means she would have the opportunity to look through it and see other closed rituals. You need to contact your DCP or CO ASAP about this. Let us know what they say

Ali,
I agree.... I don't think the faculty advisor should've even really been in the room while the ceremony was going on... and I think any sister should be allowed to see the ritual book, I think that is actually a chapter to chapter decision because I know we have a transfer sister who said she was told that only people who need to read from it because they are performing the ceremony are supposed to see.... but our vice said anyone who wants to can ask and she'd let them look.. so I don't know what national thinks about that issue... but different chapters seem to have devoloped different rules on that for some reason..

They let the adviser come into the room during formal meetings, she can't come in for the ritual stuff, but she can still see everything. I personally feel if an initiated alum can be there to perform ritual ceremonies, she should be allowed to over an adviser.

I agree on both counts
only an initiated sister should perform a ceremony...If they didn't let you, they should've found another alum to come in...if necessary an active could even do it, but not a non-initiated advisor
second, we were told by International personnel that ANY sister can have access to the ritual ....it is even recommended that sisters see it, especially if you're doing a ritual workshop...If someone is saying another sister cannot see it, that's bullshit...we are all sisters and we all have the right to our ritual.

Hey, I have a friend who has a Caddy. . .we could fit the body of the non-Phi Sig faculty advisor in the trunk!!!!
However, I agree and whoever made the decision should be called before ALMIGHTY J-BOARD(this is grounds for disaffliation but maybe it can be just a soft crime this time)! We take an oath when we initiated that everything we see, hear, and do should be kept secret. Allowing a non-Phi Sig member to see our ritual is a MAJOR OFFENSE!
However, you need to find out your rights as an alumnae from National. Don't tell them what happened(because you may not be able to do anything about it) but just find out if an alumnae saw something that wasn't appropriate. . .what are their rights as far as having a say-so in situations like that. It needs to be addressed immediately so that it won't happen again.

Reflections Manual pg. 92
Closed rituals ceremonies are degined to pass on the traditions of Phi Sigma Sigma tonew members.
Closed rituals include:
ritual meetings
installations of officers
informal initiation (is there such a thing)
installation of a chapter
formal pinning
formal initiation
initiation into an alumnae chapter

Hey,
were you able to discuss and resolve this situation with the chapter? There's not much you can do to change what happened, but you can prevent it from occuring again!
hope it all turned out ok...
