Question GMU Sororities

I am interested in some of the sororities at George Mason in VA. I have seen a lot of sister's from various sororities on the board and I want to hear what they think about greek life at mason. I am a sophmore and a transfer student. The only greek I know a lot about at Mason is ZTA and that is purely through research done by my sister (she is in Kappa Kappa Gamma from Tech) and she thinks ZTA is number one(at Mason) along with Chi O and AOTT.

I am undecided about any sorority and have yet to meet any sister's of any of them (Formal Recruitment isn't till the 19th). I want to know so much about them and am really open to join any of them. I just want one where the sisters are fun and really mesh with me. I have been researching all of them and they all seem really great. Any more info about any of them would be appreciated!

I was involved in a bad hazing incident with a local sorority at another university and I want to make sure that isn't going to happen again. I am so psyched about formal rush! I can't wait till the 19th! I'll let you all know how it goes! Thanks to anyone who responds.

When going through recruitment I think it's important not to look at the house with the biggest trophy case but the one you'll feel the most at home with.

Because a certain chapter is "number one" doesn't mean it's the best place for you. Research is good... It's good to know your stuff when you walk into any situation. However, wait until you've given all groups a chance to make your decisions.

GMU has 3 National Panhellenic Conference Sororities listed on its Greek Life page. I am not sure if there are more so someone please jump in if I'm mistaken. The ones listed are:

Alpha Omicron Pi
Alpha Xi Delta
Zeta Tau Alpha

Here is the link for GMU's Greek Life page:
http://www.gmu.edu/student/soap/html...life_page.html

I also found the individual chapter links which are not accessible from their Greek Life page:

AOII's chapter at GMU:
http://www.gmu.edu/org/aopi/

AXiD's GMU Chapter:
http://www.gmu.edu/org/alphaxidelta/

GMU's ZTA chapter:
http://www.gmuzta.org/

They all look like great chapters! All of these sororities are wonderful organizations and are strong nationally as everyone here will tell you. My advice would be to keep an open heart and mind going through recruitment because what someone else thinks is "best" may not be "best" for you. Also generally speaking, I do not believe that hazing is tolerated by the national organizations of these sororities or by most universities in this day and age. I cannot speak personally for GMU, but I know that to be true based on my own experiences as a sorority member and the experiences of my other friends at other college campuses.

This is a great place to ask questions and get advice! Have a great time going through recruitment and let us know how it goes.

Aphigal,

Yes, it is strange now that you mention it. It really struck me as odd that there were only 3 sororities listed, but that's all I could find on the GMU Greek life page. After I read your post, I did a generic search on the web and found a whole separate page for GMU's panhellenic, and lo and behold, three other sororities are listed on it as well. Now I must add that I do not know how up-to-date this page is given that the GMU Greek Life page has no link to it, but here goes:

Here is the web page:
http://www.geocities.com/acampbell57...nhellenic.html

and the other chapters are:

Alpha Phi
Gamma Phi Beta
Chi Omega

The links to the chapters are included on the panhellenic web page. Again more wonderful national groups that look like great chapters at GMU!

Suzymoonspider, it looks like you have a lot to look forward to! Hope you enjoy recruitment!

In my humble opinion....

...the Gamma Phi group at GMU is strong and well-supported by alumnae there -- I used to be stationed at the State Dept and was a member of the Gamma Phi alumnae chapter there -- we always Loved doing things for our collegiate sisters at GMU! Our Gamma Phi national convention was just held (last week of June) in DC too -- lots of wonderful local alumnae support was in abundance! So don't rule out Gamma Phi Beta -- woohoo!

Just because a house is #1 (and in whose estimation is that anyways?!) doesn't mean it's going to be right for you -- go where you feel like its HOME!!

I agree with all of the other posts before mine. It's very true that the "number one" house may not be the right one for you, or it may be, who knows? My suggestion is to keep an open mind during rush, and you will know which one is right for you. Hazing is not condoned by any college panhellenic association, nor by the university community, which is the plus to joining a "National/Inernational" organization. I'm not knocking locals, as I'm sure they have their benefits, but I know they don't have the same type of governing bodies that IFC/PHC GLOs do.

Best of luck to you, and be sure to check out each of the houses international/national websites, they give you a great idea of how the organization is as a whole.
