Red face are the reputations true?

I am going to be going through rush fairly soon and I had something to ask anyone who is already part of a sorority. i've heard a lot about the sororities at my school and i wanted to know if some of the things people have told me are true. (I'm not trying to offend anyone-this is just what i heard) For example, i heard that alpha phi was slutty, that KD was all really rich girls and Chi-Os are really quiet. of course, i am planning to go through rush with an open mind, but i would appreciate anything anyone could tell me! Thanks!

First I would like to know what school you are going to. Are these reputation rumors for that school specifically or are you generalizing nationally? Look I'm sorry I don't mean to be defensive but people keep saying bad things about other chapters of my sorority - coke heads, stuck up, high class sluts, just plain sluts, mean, etc. Can we use a little tact here people? Strange thing is that all of these chapters are fairly strong and it seems to be personal perspectives that cause these commments.

I just want to remind you (and all rushees) to take everything you hear with a grain of salt. Everyone has there own vested interest in what they say. They could also be basing this off of one or two people. Try to keep and open mind, follow your heart and you'll find the right place for you. The reputations may be true and they may not. You'll just have to find out for yourself.

lizportland: I would urge you to keep an open mind, because I'm sure that what you've heard is stereotypes. What's more, I'm sure that each group might have a girl who's quiet, rich, or..err...."morally casual".

One thing that you should definitely do, is BE DISCREET. Don't ever say things out loud like "I heard ____ sorority is really (insert negative thing here)". You never know who's listening! SERIOUSLY!! A girl who has a KD room-mate might hear you, or an Alpha Phi's boyfriend might overhear you....YOU NEVER KNOW!! And if you're seen to be saying negative things about a sorority, the other sororities might get a bad impression of you.

Go through Rush, and see for yourself, and keep an open mind. Your gut instinct and impressions will tell you ALOT about which groups is best for you.

And come back after Rush and tell us all how it worked out and what house you pledged!

Oh - we definitely have a lot of quiet Chi O's on this board!

Liz - as everyone else has said - NEVER repeat rep rumors or stereotypes in person or on the net when you are rushing, because you can seriously hurt your chances. It's a very small world and you never know who knows who. If I was you I'd delete this post and try to cover my butt but that's just my opinion.

Pay no attention to stereotypes. Doing so is a very good way to end up miserable in a house you hate.

Thank you for making me laugh on a Monday-
Chi O's - quiet???? Only during study hours at the library and even then.... the library staff walks around with duct tape to keep us from talking to our sisters! Like everyone said- those rumors you heard- let your post on Greek Chat be the end of them because if you say any of them on your campus- it just won't come across nice and I don't want that to happen to you!!! Good luck with rush!! Sue

Y'all, I have a pretty funny story kinda pertaining to this topic. I stay at school during the summer. I hate my hometown, so I stay in Charleston and work. There are 4 freshman orientations during the summer. My boyfriend's fraternity likes to throw parties during the orientations. It's a kinda welcome to ChuckTown - prerush freshman guys - scope out the new freshman chickies kinda thing. I go b/c I'm not one to miss out on a good party! Anyhow, I like to talk to the incoming girls and find out if they are going through rush. They usually ask what sorority I'm in (ZTA), but then I try to just talk generally about greek life and the rush process. (I don't want to get in trouble for dirty rushing, ya know?) Anyhow, in June I was talking to this one girl, and she asked me what I was. When I told her, she goes (get this), "Oh, I heard Zetas were whores." I couldn't believe she said that! Yeah, she was drunk, but still. Use your head stupid girl! So I said, "Hmm, that's news to me. I was under that impression that we were known as the loud girls who know how to have a good time." And I went on to say other good things about my chapter (besides, we truly are not any more morally casual than any other greek or independent girls on campus). So finally she says, "Wow, y'all sound pretty cool, and I like you...I wanna be a Zeta! I wanna be a whore!" I was like, honey, you won't be a Zeta if I have anything to do with it. My boyfriend heard the whole conversation, and couldn't stop laughing. That girl was just an idiot, but I made a point to remember her name and hometown so I can tell my sisters what she said.

So, see, you never know what kinda trouble listening to stereotypes can get you in!

Any organization in general should not be stereotyped. Also, each chapter may differ a bit from school to school. Forget whatever reputation a soroity might have and go in with an open mind. good luck

It has been my experience ( I don't want to assume it has been like this for everyone), that reputations stay way too long. One person, can change a rep from good to bad and bad to good (however bad to good is harder is seems). Just because XYZ sorority was whatever way 1,2,5, or even 10 years ago does not mean they are like that anymore. People need to be a little more openminded.

Lots of people go into recruitment with their minds already made up because of stuff that they've heard. Unfortunately, many of them (on my campus anyway) continue to be closed-minded throughout the whole process. I think more people should do what I did... keep an open mind and go with whatever fits YOU. Don't refuse to join a sorority just because they may not be the most popular on campus.

Before I even got to college, I had heard from a friend that XYZ Sorority was the "Cool" sorority. Anyways, I went through Rush thinking, who cares about the other houses, I want to be an XYZ. Well, I didn't get asked back to Pref at their house. And, looking back, I love every one of my sisters, I have a blast in my own sorority and XYZ was not for me! I only wanted it cuz I was told it was cool. But my chapter is more involved on campus, has more sisterhood, and I think we have more well-rounded girls! Don't go with what you hear, go with how you feel in the houses!

Rumors SUCK!!!!!

You need to find out on your own not someone elses say so! Each chapter on each campus is unto themselves with the backing of a National!
Some of the smaller Orgs are outstanding while some are not the same as the House on Campus at your College!
I hope that when you go around you find the rigt one as you should be able to feel it! Watch Animal House to see how it Might work!!!! My Favorite Greek Movie by the by!!!!!!!!! There is always the good the bad and the ugly! Shades of what's his name!
