Recruitment problem...

Okay so heres the deal...

My honorary, TBS and our brother org KKPsi, are both Co-ed. We both are for members of the band, which limits our recruitment base to marching band, wind ensamble, jazz band and symphonic band...

Right now the numbers stand at TBS with 10 sisters and Kappas with 20 brothers or so...

We have 5 in marching band, they have 10 or so...

Heres the problem.

Our band has 69 members, VERY small, were usually at 100 or above-

We are LOW in numbers.

Most of the band sees Kappas more, seeing that both drum majors are Kappas and almost all section leaders are as well....

Two of our five sisters are in the colorguard (aka- me and my roomie) so we are seperated from the band a lot...

Most of the non greek memebers of the band are leaning toward Kappas.

We TRY to recruit...

Its not working.

What can we do?

Our Kappa chapter is NOT working with us to help us, theyre our brothers... we exist for the same purpose, the shouldnt be wanting to see us close...

If we talk to our nationals, they'll be like:
Youre not working with your Kappa chapter well...

or

Talk to your CFR... yea, she visited last year... before we had a bid problem (both ors bid 10 or so of the same people... Kappas went out a day before ours and some people signed cos they thought they wouldnt get one from us) and started drama between the chapters....

Short of bidding everyone in band and seeing who comes...

WHAT SHOULD WE DO?!

What does TBS have to offer that Kappa does not?

Since you have both groups on campus, shouldn't TBS be women only,and KKPsi be men only? I thought TBS/KKP went coed only if there was one chapter on campus. (Am I interpreting this correctly? I hear you saying that BOTH chapters have male and female members.)

I was in band my freshman year, and we had both chapters, segregated by gender. I did not join, although I think anyone in band could join either. The groups usually worked well together, and didn't seem to be 'competing' for members or anything else.

Other than that solution, I guess the question is WHY does the other group seem to want to compete? If each group carved out their own 'niche' or identity, would that help? You guys could work together to support the whole music program, but one group could really do service, etc for the band, and the other for the jazz band (or something like that). Why are people wanting to join KKPsi? What is different about them?

I might just be talking outta my butt because I haven't experienced this, these are just my random thoughts.

Us here at UC Irvine have a small band as well but we plan on expanding out to the symphonic and jazz groups since our members are mostly from the pep/marching band. I'd say go for more potentials that the brothers aren't looking into. We're too small of a chapter to have a TBS chapter started so that's why we have female brothers.

TBS and KKY are both not allowed to be single sex. There are some chapters that are single sex due to history and the way things are (aka try to discourage opposite sex membership)

TBS does uniforms, wind ensamble tour and some other things, we do have our niches but we have the problem of KKY being bigger and having more people to recruit for them....

We have our first official meet the sisters tomorrow, and 2 of our 10 wont be there cos we have colorguard sectional... grrr.

I dont think our brothers will help us.

How about this...actively recruit for BAND, finding all the people who came to college and decided not to continue with band after high school, or mistakenly thought it was only for music majors. If you increase the number of band members, you have more people to pick from. At my school TBS and KKPsi try to do that.

We DID recruit for band...

but there arent that many people interested in band...

Our band dir. resigned... and some people didnt come back cos of that...

and some people didnt come back because of Doc, and when they found out he wasnt doing it- they couldnt come back...
