A Matter Of Five Years

I just wanted to post something I noticed at our alumni BBQ this past weekend.

One of our alumni showed me a map of where all the Greek houses were in 1995 (When he was an active). I noticed that we had A LOT of GLOs that we don't have anymore at SDSU since I started in 2000. Here's who was there back then and who isn't now:

DZ
AZD
ChiO
AGD
ATO
FIJI
Phi Delts
Delta Chi
Lambda Chi

And we also have some GLOs NOW that we didn't have back then:

Phi Psi
Phi Kapp
ADPi
AEPi
Sammy
KA

Add to that, back then we had 120 actives, and the biggest house, Sigma Chi, had 200! Now in 2002, the biggest house is still Sigma Chi, but only has 98.

I guess I just wanted to point how in a matter of five short years, Greek Life can change dramatically.

I've seen it happen, too, although not as dramatically. Since I was a frosh 8 yrs ago, my campus:

Lost one fraternity (PKA)
Recolonized two fraternities (AEP and Phi Tau)
Lost one sorority (AXD)
One fraternity lost its house (Sigma Chi)
One fraternity got a house (Sig Ep)
One sorority got a much nicer house (AF in the old PKA house)

A couple of fraternities that were big have shrunk - Sammy is even being recolonized. One chapter that has perennially struggled is finally getting the numbers up. Of course, the "desirable" houses have almost completely changed. When I was a freshman, one chapter was a colony that reputedly took anyone, and now it is one of the biggest and best on campus.

The moral: No chapter can afford to be complacent!

Well here at UNF we are opposite of you guys. We are actually growing dramatically.
Over the 4 years ive been a Sig here we have had:

Two fraternities get chartered(Chi Phi and Kappa Alpha)
One looking to colonize(Zeta Beta Tau)
One sorority getting chartered\(Delta Gamma)
Our first multicultural sorority coming on campus(Gamma Eta)

When i first joined we had approx. 30 brothers and now after 4 years we have 46 and expect to have a huge rush this fall fetching around 25 pledges. We are really excited about greek life here at UNF, and proud to be the top fraternity at UNF in awards and men.

5 short years can do SO MUCH!! umass greeks are declining in numbers since 5 years ago, but we are working on changing that!

It's amazing how things can change so quickly

SAE was huge about 10 years ago when my sorority first got started... now they are non existant.
Some of the locals became Phi Sig and Sigma Kappa.
ZBT was brought to campus about 2 years ago.
ADPi had less than 8 members at one time and now are on the rise and have about 30.
AXO and A Phi were/still are the top 2 sororities on campus. Phi Sig, however, is closing in on them.
My groups goes in spurts. We started off getting pledge classes of 30 when we first started, then that declined to about less than ten, and now it's on the rise again.
Oh... and Sig Ep, Pikes, and Kappa Sig all had houses on 21st and Q... that was Sacramento's "fraternity row"... now the houses are pretty much Kaput.

Back in the late 1940's when Delta Nu(our local) was formed there were 26 social fraternities on campus. There are now 2. Talk about a change.

Just in three years, from the time I was a freshman to now being a senior, dynamics have changed a lot...

ATO handed in their charter and became a quasi-local underground fraternity called EI (Epsilon Iota, which is the name of the chapter they were under ATO).

Delta Chi, formerly the top fraternity on campus, is getting a little cocky and their numbers haven't been so hot. DTD, on the other hand, is giving them a run for their money. All great guys.

Alpha Sigma Phi has under 20 brothers, cause they graduated a TON, and it would be great to see them take a huge pledge class again. When I was a freshman, they had over 80 members.

Sorority-wise, our chapter has maintained it's spot in the top tier. Phi Sigma Sigma, who I absolutely LOVE, has come a long way in turning their chapter around and is really doing some great things. Sisters that weren't contributing ANYTHING to their chapter ended up leaving, and they went through formal rush last semester with only 30 sisters (ceiling here is 68) and still managed to get FABULOUS women. They are quickly becoming our hottest competition... which is ok, because I really adore their chapter. I'm best friends with their president . The chapter that was at the bottom of the tier when I was a freshman has been building up their numbers and is doing quite well for itself... and one of the middle-tier sororites has fallen quite a bit and currently has under 20 members.

It's really interesting to see how the tides can turn...

KD lost her charter & Zeta's numbers have dropped

Phi Tau has really risen in their grades and number

But Bethany College's overall rush numbers have dramatically dropped.

I don't look for Greek Life to be a part of my campus in five years. *sighs*

-Mu Sigma Upsilon (MC sorority), Zeta Tau Alpha and Pi Kappa Phi have arrived
-Sigma Gamma Rho returned
-LXA, SAE, and Phi Kappa Theta moved to different houses
-ATO, PiKA, and TKE have lost their houses
-Theta Chi got a house and rose in numbers
-Sorority recruitment numbers have continually gone up

If you're talking about TKE losing their house at KU, I remember years ago when the founders of holiday Inn built what was considered the best TKE house in the nation at KU.

I know that TKE's chapter house plans were a Holiday Inn hotel ski lodge from Vail, Colorado (of up the "higher ups" of Holiday Inn was a TKE alum from KU) ... Why do I know this?... my husband was a TKE at KU. Also - TKE, PKA & PKTheta didn't necessarily "lose" their houses... most sold their houses to apartment developers for mucho dinero. I believe that all are seeking or have located new housing...

It is amazing to see rockchalk tell what greek life is like today at KU. When I was at KU (I pledged KD in 1992) AZD was colonizing (sad to see they are gone now) and ACACIA lost their charter (their old house is now PKTau's house). In addition, AOTT lost their charter in (I believe) 1996 as did ZBT.

Yikes - all that has happened in KU's greek system since 1992!!! What a difference 10 years makes...

Since I graduated in 1997:

We have lost FIJI and SAE. No new fraternities or sororities.

Sigma Kappa has gotten a house, and as of this fall, Theta has a suite in one of the grad dorms.

AEPhi has grown by leaps and bounds.

The Panhel sororities used to be voting IFC members; they have withdrawn from IFC.

The biggest change by far is that, starting this fall, all freshmen will be required to live on campus. A new dorm has been built to support this. Previously, anyone in a fraternity (including freshmen) lived in the fraternity's house.

As a result of this, the school is going to deferred recruitment. Sorority rush will be the first week of spring semester. I think the fraternities will rush in September instead of August. (I'm afraid all of this will kill numbers I guess we'll see in a few months.)
