Parliamentary Procedure

Any of us that use it know that it's absolutely the best way to get things done in a large group. We all have different ways of implementing it but I'm sure most of us use it.

How does your chapter handle parliamentary procedure education? How do you settle disputes of rules? Do you think it works well for your group? When is a good time to use it, when is not a good time?

Wello, we tend to go with standing rules that have been in effect for a few years. But not a lot of people are aware of proper parlimentary procedure. I plan on incorporating more in my member eduacation program this Fall. Lots of times it si the people that say, "This is the way we have done it before" that win on certain issues, so I have been educating myself and talking about it with other brothers that are interested. I also think that this is a good continuing education program that could be initiated.

When I was an undergrad, we didn't have this, but now the chapter has a parliamentarian chair. It is his/her job to make sure the chapter is following procedure.

At our national convention we follow it closely, and have a non-member act as parliamentarian. That eliminates any kind of "special interest" & keeps everyone focused.

For chapters that don't have this in place, I really recommend it. It does make things go smoother!

our parliamantary procedure is handled by our Member At Large position..(who also runs our standards board) Last semester she gave us a sheet with the different motions we could make and what they did to keep in our binders. She reminds us if we forget to use it, and also tells us that "we are still in a meeting"if we get overly chatty. She also somtimes gives a short lesson on at the first meeting after initiation for the newest sisters. I'm pretty sure we use the standard...'point of inquiry' and all that good stuff...

We actually run an hour long session on basic parlimentary procedure during our pledge program. I have run the session session at state and region conferences of our fraternity.

Since we don't get into anything complex in our meetings, there are rarely any dispute about rules of order.

Anytime you are running a meeting where decisions must be made is the time to use it. If you have what I call a 'program' meeting, there is no need for it.
