Question No COB at UF?

ok, so I heard today that if a house makes quota during rush, then, even if some of the girls drop, there is not going to be any COB (aka snap) bidding? And to get ONE snap bid, something like 12 girls have to drop, and the house would have to be under quota by alot. I think quota is going to be set at 62. Has anyone heard anything similar?

OK, I can't really answer your question 'cuz I don't go to UF, but I can tell you one thing: Snap Bidding is not the same thing as COB.

Snap Bidding is done right after bid matching, before bids are handed out. They take the list of girls who didn't match (and that includes any who dropped out of Recruitment during the week) and give the sororities who didn't make quota the opportunity to "snap them up." (It doesn't matter whether the woman attended the sorority's preference. Usually the sororities have a third snap list as well as their first and second lists). Women who are snapped are not bound by the same one-year rule as women who are matched through the preference system. However, the woman who is snapped and the Greek Advisor and chapter Membership Advisor (and maybe the chapter Membership Chair) are the only ones who know that a woman was snapped (though other sisters might be able to figure it out if the woman didn't go to their Pref party). The woman who is snapped becomes a part of the pledge class and counts toward quota. However, if the chapter is under total after the pledge class has joined, they may still COB, regardless of who drops out. If the chapter is over total, they may not COB. However (correct me if I'm wrong, PnguinTrax) if enough NMs drop out and the chapter falls back down below total, then the chapter may COB. COB is informal recruitment. It can happen at any time and any chapter who is below total may COB.

Hope that cleared some things up.

hmmmm

KappaKittyCat,
Thanks for the differentiation. I didn't know that (whoops, my bad!) So what are the bids considered that are given out after bid day?
Does anyone know about this thing that I heard about at UF?

Most likely (and correct me if I'm wrong!) what you heard is referring to total membership in each chapter, and eligibility to do COB after formal recruitment has finished.

It wouldn't surprise me if most or all of the sororities at Florida are over campus total after recruitment. What that means is that quota might be 60 but campus total is 150--these numbers are examples only, I don't know the chapter sizes at UF

Using this example, each chapter can take up to 60 new members during formal recruitment, even if it puts their chapter membership total over 150 women. If most chapters started with member totals of 90 or more, and they all get quota, then they'd all be at or over 150 women. That means they couldn't take any more members and not allowed to COB. The higher the number of returning members and new members, the less likely a chapter would be eligible to COB at any point during the school year.

Like KappaKittyCat said, if the chapter is still under campus total after recruitment then they would be allowed to have COB until they reached campus total. If all the chapters are at or over the campus total, then no one could extend bids until either are under campus total or the next formal recruitment period.

Hope this helps!

locol sororities is right; usually, a new colonizing chapter calls moretoreum, which means no chapters can COB. HOWEVER, DZ has not done this, so we can COB to total if we want to. I have no clue why they did it this way. but hey.

Erin's right, DZ declined their right to a two-week moratorium on open bidding, which was a very nice gesture on their part. It makes things so much easier for all the sororities that do COB women, because those chapters can still snap bid and then COB throughout the semester.

Aiya- as far as I know, most houses that lose girls from their pledge classes cannot COB due to the fact that the number of women remaining in the pledge class + the number in their chapter still equals a number over total, and the only houses that can COB are those who do not have total PLEDGED to their house. I'm not sure about that, it's a good question and I simply never thought to ask anyone about it.

Every group may take quota at Formal Recruitment, regardless of where they start out or where that would put them. Even if total is 100 and the chapter starts out with 110, the chapter may take quota (and the Panhellenic should probably reevaluate total, but that's another story). It makes sense because quota is usually about the same amount from year to year, so the number of seniors who graduate should about equal the number of new members, mostly freshmen, who'll be replacing them. Because snaps count towards quota, a chapter may snap to quota, even if it would put them over total.

The way I understand it is this: Chapter size = Actives + New Members. If an NM class puts a chapter over total, the chapter would only be able to COB if enough NMs depledged to put them back under total. If total is 100, the NM class puts the chapter at 110, and 15 NMs depledge, the chapter would only be able to COB 5 girls, even if NM class was 20. Am I correct, PnguinTrax, O Priestess of Panhellenic Wisdom?
