Ole Miss Sorority Recruitment GPA: SOS!!!

Hello everyone! I will be a freshman at Ole Miss this fall, and I am considering participating in sorority recruitment. I recently graduated from a very large high school in Texas, and as rush registration has just opened up, I would like to pose a few questions that I have in regards to recruitment. I am well aware that Ole Miss Sorority chapters tend to be highly selective when choosing their new members during rush, and due to the overwhelmingly large number of girls who participate in recruitment each fall, initial cuts based on GPA alone are a necessary part of the process. While Ole Miss follows a 4.0 grading scale, the high school I attended follows a 5.0 scale. I followed a very dedicated AP course load all throughout my 4 years, and as a result, my unweighted GPA (#out of 4.0, AP classes are weighed the same as on-level courses) is less than stellar in comparison to my weighted GPA of 4.0 out of 5.0, which takes into account the rigor of my courses, and is much more forgiving to slightly lower grades in AP classes. I understand that for the sake of keeping the recruitment process simple and organized, most universities disregard the weighted GPA system in favor of a universal 4.0 scale that does not discriminate based on academic rigor, but rather just numbers alone. After months of researching, it is still unclear to me as to whether or not Sororities at Ole Miss take high school course rigor into account when evaluating a PNM, therefore I would greatly appreciate it if anyone would be willing to inform me about how that works. That's a lot of numbers thrown in there so I'm just going to say don't worry about it. There is zero you can do about it now anyway and cuts happen for LOTS of reasons, very few of which you have any control over. Go through, head held high, accept the inevitable cuts with dignity and grace and proceed through each round as if it's a new day. Because it is. Most girls who don't drop out will find a sorority home. Stated another way, if you want a sorority home, don't quit. Take what you get and be happy. Sometimes that can mean biting a bitter pill, but in the end you will be happy if you allow yourself to be. Even in that chapter you think you're not a fit in. Good luck! And yes, get those recs.

Chapters have no idea how rigorous your high school or classes might have been. They use a 4.0 scale without taking weight into consideration.

You do get a "bump" from those hard classes on your recommendations. Stress to your rec writers and on your resume the AP classes you have taken and they will include that information on your recommendations :-) Hope this helps

I agree with ThetaLady. Your rec writers are your best bet at Ole Miss. Your GPA will get you thru the initial cuts but if you don't have your recs lined up,the GPA may not matter. They can make you or break you at Ole Miss.

I agree also with what everyone has said. My daughter goes to Ole Miss and she went thru COB and found her home. While she may never actually know what other houses may have offered her a bid going through formal recruitment she is very very happy with her new sisters and home!! Greek life at Ole Miss is very popular and you're so right last year I believe the number of girls going thru rush was > 1,500!!! I do highly suggest that you get your recs in as soon as possible keeping in mind what the others have said with regard to what to include for the writers, writing them.
