Harmless Hazing
I just saw on Fox news about some pro football team was taping their rookie QB to a backboard. And the title of the bite was "Harmless Hazing" and then the announcer was saying oh you gotta love hazing ha ha. And the other one said something like haha ya you gotta go through it to make it....something to that affect. Just wondering if anyone else saw it and their take on it.

Wow that is pretty stupid and ignorant they way they talked about hazing like that. Hazing is hazing...no such thing as harmless hazing. no one should have to prove anything to be anywhere. Neither Greek nor sports teams. Its funny how hazing is completely associated with Greek but honestly especially now a days, I think its more the sports teams and such who are doing the hazing. And they do some pretty mean stuff. If you tried out and made the team, shouldn't that be proof enough that your belong? Seriously, the way they laughed makes me worried that people don't take hazing as seriously as they should.

I absolutely HATE that professional sports still promote, glamorize and tolerate hazing.
Every year during the NFL training camp weeks, we get bombarded with "human interest" stories about how the veteran players HAZE the rookies - personal servitude, embarrassing displays, physical abuse - it all comes out as "harmless fun traditions"....BULLSH!T.
Sometime last year, I heard a radio commercial for the NBA's Atlanta Hawks. There was a veteran player talking about the youth of the team, and how it was a good thing. Especially since he had a whole team of guys to "pick him up early for practice, carry his luggage on road trips, etc.". It was obviously a testament in favor of hazing!
I called the Hawks organization and submitted a complaint...not that it did much good.
I would say that the Greek Community needs to use its combined pull to register complaints with whatever professional sports team in your area that promotes HAZING of any kind!
It reminds me of a report by Alfred Univ. a few years ago that studied the level of hazing on athletic teams. It found that hazing was very much alive and well in almost all team sports - from the high school level on up to the professionals.
It is a disturbing fact, especially when you consider how many varsity athletes in college are also members of a GLO.
And what's even more ironic, didn't Alfred Univ. recently vote to destroy its Greek system due to "behavioral problems". I'm sure the school will continue to support it's intercollegiate athletics program...despite the high level of binge drinking and hazing that has been scientifically found to exist in these venues by THEIR OWN DAMN STUDY!!!

Alfred's study sux
The phony "athletic hazing" study by Alfred was a joke.
Their definition of hazing was so broad, that it "proved" that every football player, soccer player, softball player, cheerleader, and every other fall season team member was hazed, cause their definition of hazing included "required to return to school early (before rest of student body) for practice."
If you accept that all of these people are hazed, it jacks up the stats substantially.
And similarly, Eileen's fratenity hazing "deaths" include a lot of non-pledges and non-members. At So. Carolina, three guys were not allowed into a party, so they came back with a gun and killed two or three people, who happened to be pledges. These are hazing deaths???? Eileen says "yes."

I saw the same the same new story and I wasn't impressed. No form of hazing is appropritate. People should know better. Now while some may not feel that it's hazing because it doesn't bother them, it may very well make several others extremely uncomfortable. No matter what it is. The media should know better and not condone this kind of behaviour. We have hazing at my former higschool, and at most of the highschools in Toronto. We call it 9ering. Initiation into highschool. Well it got so bad that people we being suspended expelled, and even charged. I know I would have not joined Pi Beta Phi if they had hazed and I can say the same for many of my sisters. There is no harmless hazing, because someone will get hurt

OK, while I do agree that actual hazing is never harmless, but does anyone else agree with me that hazing rules have been taken too far???? I think if it doesn't inflict mental or physical or psychological pain, then it should be left alone. For example for big/little match-up's I know a lot of chapters used to string yarn all through the house and tangle it up and stuff to find their big. Now what is the harm in that??? Sure, don't lead it up to a fraternity brother that they HAVE to sleep with or a 5th of 151 to drink or a beating, but c'mon folks, haven't we gone too far???? I think that there are a lot of great things that you can do with new members to strengthen their bond which is now not allowed!!!

the string around the house is hazing...whoops...I mean wow yea we never did that but your right sometimes national takes it a little too far. any little thing is bad to them just because they want to make such strong impressions. problem is chapters still haze (just as one in particular NJ phi sig chapter...damn girls ) Yet, does national do anything about them? Also, nobody does anything about the sports teams but they breath down our backs if we put string around a house. It is unfair
