NPC Consulting Team

I understand that the NPC consulting team will be visiting the campus where I am currently a grad student, to do a review of the sorority system--presumably to help them decide if they need to expand (IMHO, they do--there are 12 national sororities on this campus, 250 women were cross-cut last year, and we expect at least as many to suffer the same fate this year).

I am just curious as to what this entails, and how long NPC takes to make their recommendations. Has anyone on GC been through this in recent years? I would really, really appreciate any insight on this subject. Thanks in advance!

I don't have an answer sorry But i have another, semi-related question.
I'm part of an NPC sorority but we are the only National on campus. We have on other local. (yea i know tiny greek population) There is a woman who wants to bring another national to campus. Will NPC get involved cause we are? We don't actually have Pan-hell cause you need two nationals...
so where does NPC come in and work this out. Numbers are no where near stable on our campus. (We are 4 yrs old and the other is a former DG-gone local) I don't know if I'm being clear. How do nationals decide to enter a campus?
Thanks for any insight you have!

Talking

E,

You'll find the answer to your question in Wishinandhopin's thread about her rush experience. Gamma Phi is the only national w/ several locals. Wishin' decided to form her own local with the goal of going national.

We had an NPC consulting team come in to oversee our recruitment. I guess the way the numbers were working out raised some suspicions about the recruitment practices at my school. I don't remember a lot about what they did (it was my first rush on the other side). With NPC overseeing recruitment, every sorority made quota or close to it, more pnms stayed in recruitment, and more women received bids. Hopefully NPC will determine that your campus needs to expand so that more women can have the opportunity to join a sorority.

Colleenie, do you know how they got NPC to come and oversee your campus' recruitment? I think that it may be beneficial to my school, given the nightmare that recruitment usually is.

I'm not sure how they got NPC to come. I think either the greek advisor requested it or NPC came on their own b/c they were noticing a few things about our recruitment: Large numbers of women were going through recruitment, but large numbers were also dropping out especially before and after pref parties. Only half the houses were taking quota, while smaller houses were taking only a few new members. Large houses were "padding their parties" and not making the cuts necessary to allow pnms the chance to look at other houses.
It's hard for me to remember all the details b/c it was so long ago. It did help that year. Unfortunately the following year we got a new panhellenic advisor and everything went back to the old way. Now my school seems to be losing a sorority every year.
I'd talk to an NPC representative or your panhellenic advisor if you feel that your recruitment could use some improvement. Hopefully they can help before the situation gets too bad.

We aren't actually an NPC school though. AST is the only house that is required to follow NPC guidelines, the local couldn't give a hoot. sorry i wasn't clear. there is a third group of women that want to bring a new national to campus. Will NPC actually come and look at us cause we will then be required to form NPC? i don't get how it works...
does this make sense?
Thanks!

The best advise I can give is to ask these questions directly to NPC. They have a website and/or you could write them. If you have a greek life advisor she/he would be the one to get involved, if not then have that group form a local or contact NPC.

Either way, NPC has ALOT of rules about these things and they would most likely be the only ones who could answer your questions. I hope this helps!

On a related note, how is a decision made to raise campus total rather than bring a new group in? I know that Panhellenic has to vote for a new group to expand on their campus, but you know...make the sororities bigger to accommodate the extra women, or bring in a new sorority?

I would guess that the decision to extend or raise total would be a judgement call by the chapters. It depends on the campus...not every school is equipped to handle 150-member chapters. In that case, extension might be a better option. But if you had, say, 2 GLOs with a total of 40, raising total might be the way to go. Either way, I believe it would come down to a Panhellenic vote.

I don't know...its late...am I making sense?

dzsaigirl - yes, it's up to the campus Panhellenic whether to raise total, invite a new sorority to colonize, or do nothing.
