Bruhs in HOTGIRL Magazine?

Do any of you ladies read this magazine? It's superficial, but we'll take the love.

Who Run It?

On every major college campus across the world there are many fraternities that claim they run the yard. However, at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina there is no doubt that the Omega Psi Phi fraternity got everything on lock down. I recently caught up with a couple of the fraternity's members,Terry Casey, a.k.a. "Phunk" and Derek Barksdale, a.k.a. "Quick" to discuss some of the advantages in being a Que Dog.

HG: First of all are there any qualifications to join your fraternity?

Phunk: Yes, you have to have a strong mentality, acquire a 2.5 gpa, and be a 2nd sememester freshman.

HG: There have been a lot of criticism about the Omega Psi Phi fraternity as for as the initiation prcess, would you say that most of it is unfair?

Quick: Yea, because most people perceive us as a gang and in actuality we are a fraternity with high standards, and we require that those standards be met.

HG: I personally know that your fraternity is very much involved in the community, talk a little about what the Omega Psi Phi fraternity does to give back to the community.

Phunk: We have the Adopt a Highway program in which we choose a road in neighborhoods to clean up that usually get ignored by other organizations. We also have the Bridge Builders program that we use to tutor "at risk kids" and we got the Meals On Wheels program that takes free food to the elderly and disabled.

HG: What can people expect when they come to a Que party?

Quick: Man you can expect shirts off, lots of barking, gold boots, and stomping like there is no tomorrow.

HG: Know it is no secret that the girls love yall, why do you think that your fraternity is so appealing to the females?

Phunk: It's like the other fraternities got their girls but the majority roll or wanna roll wit us,so I guess they just respect what we represent.

HG: From Shaq to Jamaal Anderson your fraternity has been very visible in the sports world, would you say that the Omega Psi Phi was the first fraternity to be glamorized in the sports world?

Quick: Yes, a lot people don't make it or do not have the opportunity and those that do make it don't mine flaunting it.

So as you can see whether it's throwing crunk parties or giving back to the community, the Omega Psi Phi fraternity definetly knows how to run and handle their business. If you still don't believe me you can check Phunk's and Quick's credentials. Phunk already has a BS in Biology and he is currently studying for a MS in Biology. Quick's credentials read: BA in Art and Design, Associates in graphic design, and he is currently working towards attaining a MBA in Business Administration, so stop hating on dem Ques!!!

I read the article and while I understand that this is an online publication, I did not like the "interview." That interview was on the caliber of what my laziest 9th grader would write. The questions are trite, basic and the responses are even worse. I love the bruhs and I know they have that "image" but now was the time to step up that image and enlighten folks about the work that Omega Psi Phi does. The response about what it takes to be an Omega -- while i understand that this was not a smoker or informational, why did they not mention the SERVICE that prospective members must have.

I just find it incredible that an organization that I have so much respect for that has GROWN since becoming a Delta, had such a less than profound article written up. I know someone is saying is it that serious and I have to say emphatically YES IT IS. There is so much more to Omega Psi Phi than the QUE DAWG (IMO). I teach high schoolers and the other day they asked about fraternities and sororities. I mentioned all D9 in order and did not even take the time to gloat about being a DELTA (not yet anyways ) but over the past 5 years of teaching and being a DELTA, so many more students know the "party" side of ALL D9 orgs far more than they know the service and legacy sides. I am going to take the article about SOROR Alexander and post that in my classroom because MY SOROR was a TRAILBLAZER, I want my students to know the WORK side of everything before they know the "PARTY" mode of the organization. That is my rant for the day.

I love the MEN of OMEGA PSI PHI and know that you all are far more than this article, but THE WORLD at large needs to know that. They need to hear the words OMEGA PSI PHI and IMMEDIATELY think ACHIEVEMENT, Ernest Just, Langston Hughes, Charles Drew, etc. etc. etc. and not hear OPP and think SHAQ.

Thanks for your sentiments CT4

Like I said before, I didn't really like the article. I don't know much about that particular online publication, but its obvious by the writing that it is not meant for educated women. I thought that its amateurish-ness was funny. Hey, I'm just happy that somebody is allowed to show love for the Bruhs.

If anyone wants to read about Omega men effecting their communities in a positive fashion, an Omega is featured on the this months cover of Black Enterprise and also page 58 of this months Ebony Magazine.

CT4, by your inspiration, I will be posting snippets about Bruhs who are doing things in the community. Thanks for the Coleman Love.

Thank you for agreeing with me.

I think that part of my dissatisfaction with this article is that it continues to spread the image of the BRUHS as parties, owt, owt, partiers, owt, owt and owt with very little mention of the legacy, achievement, service, manliness that the MEN of Omega Psi Phi exhibit on a day to day basis. The bruhz are cool as heck and can be the owtest men in the world but I also know that so many of you all are leaders in other venues besides the dance floor and the basketball court.
