US dating trends favor women

For years, it was a man’s world in the dating pool, with the gals outnumbering the fellas. But no more. The latest U.S. Census shows that the demographics are changing. For most of the 30- to 44-year old dating populace, the number of single men and women is roughly equal, and if it’s going in anyone’s direction, it’s favoring the chicks.
It’s particularly tough for guys in their 30’s and 40’s who want younger women. By 2010, men in that age group will outnumber women five to ten years younger by 2 to 1.
"That’s good news for Mrs. Robinsons, I guess," giggles Bobby, 35, a New York-based investment banker. "Personally, I’ve always fancied older women, but perhaps more guys will come around to my way of thinking in light of these numbers."
What else can U.S. daters glean from these stats?
MANifest destiny
Women seeking men might adopt the motto, "Westward, ho!" (well, you know what I mean) because there’s a surplus of men in the western states and Alaska. Alaska has the highest male-female ratio, followed by Nevada, Colorado, Wyoming, Hawaii, Idaho and Utah. With women in those areas already in short supply, the odds of finding a man to your liking are skyrocketing, ladies.
"I’ve been looking for an excuse to go to Hawaii," says Lisa, a 42-year-old CPA in St. Louis. "My mom’s trying to marry me off — maybe she’ll even pay for the trip!"
Look for guys in these cities
For the highest concentration of men, check out some of nation’s largest cities; the number of men exceeded the number of women in Phoenix, San Diego and Dallas.
"More men than women, eh?," quips Dan, 38, a San Diego-based consultant. "Good, I like a challenge." Adds David, 24, a San Francisco-based biologist, "More men than women sounds good to a gay man like me — did they give figures for sexual orientation?" (No, they didn’t.)
Go east, young man!
Gents, if you’re looking for better odds, head east. Philadelphia and Detroit offer the best male:female ratios for you, as do the District of Columbia, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
"I’m looking for a job right now," says Bryan, 29, a marketing executive based in Denver. "I should factor this information into my job search — maybe I’ll use an online service to find a new gig and to find a new girlfriend!"
In the end, the news is probably better for girls than guys. Says Margaret, a 30-ish government employee in Austin, "If the old economics supply-demand graphs hold up, one can assume that I, as a single woman, am in greater demand. That said, honey, my dream date hasn't changed in 10 years: Give me a man who can dance, make me laugh and has health insurance and I’m game! Throw in a seersucker suit and he can write the rules!"
