Unhappy nervous friend

I have a friend who is going through NPC rush. She is shy when she first meets people and is nervous about it. Is there anything I can do or say to make her feel better?

Talking

Hi Billy!

Most sororities realize that women are really nervous during rush. However, everyone deals w/ it in different ways. Some girls become chatterboxes while others can barely say their name.

She should know it's okay to tell the girls "I'm so nervous, I hope you don't think I'm not interested if I don't talk a lot." Or something along that line.

It's actually the job of the members to get her to relax and open up. She should realize that every member she's talks to has been in her shoes. We all go through some type of rush. The members can relate to her!

p.s. It ususally helps if she thinks of rush as a one way decision. It can make her feel more powerful if she just thinks that all the sororities are competing to get her to join their house. Of course in reality it's a mutual decision.

Cool

I was so so nervous, but you kind of get paired off with a girl in the house, right when you walk in. It's not the rushee's responsibility to go up & introduce herself to everyone.
EX: Jane(rushee) enters the house w/ her rush group, then gets introduced to Mary(XYZ), who will chat with her a few minutes, then introduce her to Lynn(XYZ)

In my experience, the members of XYZ asked a lot of questions & kept the conversation going very well. Also, before rush begins, the rushees are given some examples of good questions to ask. It's not as nerve wracking as I expected, but it is very overwhelming. She'll be given a lot of info & meet a lot of people.
Wish her luck
Heidi

Exclamation

rush really isn't as bad or scary as it might seem. the first party she attends will be scary because she won't know what to expect... but they're pretty much run the same way at every house, and once she gets into her groove, it's (almost) fun. even if she's truly shy, rush is a time to bring out your cheesy side. you HAVE to make a good first impression. smile a lot, be pleasant, don't be fake. act like you'd love to be a member of their house, and don't talk about other sororities. shy people get into sororities all the time. it's not really a matter of being shy, but of how a girl presents and carries herself. if she comes across as aloof and cold, even though she really isn't once you get to know her... that's not really good enough. the sisters simply don't have time to get to know her in one short week of rush.
