Question Why does NPC Formal Rush take place only ONCE a year?

I was just wondering why is it that NPC Formal Rush takes place only *once* a year (normally in autumn, when the new school year starts)?

Then, in the next school semester (January or so) there is an Informal Rush? Why doesn't Panhel have a 2nd Formal Rush (for girls who are "eligible to Rush")? Is it because of the expense involved with Formal Rush or another reason?

Do any campuses out there at all have a 2nd Formal Rush?

Please let me know...I was wondering that today.

There is only one Formal Recruitment period a year for two reasons:

1. The sheer amount of work that is involved in recruitment.

2. Most chapters fill to quota during Formal Recruitment and if there are no winter grads, would still be at chapter total during the second semester. As such, there may be only 1 or 2 chapters on a campus open to accept new members during second semester.

Note: On some campuses they defer recruitment until the second semester. In those cases the events are usually stretched out over the course of several evenings OR take place the week before the semester begins.

Hello!! I also think there is only one formal recruitment period because like Barb said MOST chapters used to fill to ceiling after fromal rush. Today I don't think that is true. Quota is on the decline and most groups --even those that make quota easily--are facing informal recruitment in the Spring.

Personally I am very much against Panhel structuring informal/COB so much that it ends up being what I call "formal-informal rush" I mean what's the point if it is basically formal all over again. It never helps the smaller groups, costs more, and is more likely to cause friction between sororities than just COB.

Oh, at my school (6000 students, 15% greek) I would say exactly the opposite. When I was in school we had formal and structured informal. We didn't have large houses - just off-campus places - so there really wasn't much difference. The only difference with informal was the sororities could have things off campus or in their houses instead of in campus meeting rooms. I went thru structured informal and if there wouldn't have been a mutually agreed upon schedule I don't know WHAT I would have done.

If you have total COB in spring, with freshmen mainly joining in fall, that makes sense. If they decide to go for COB they probably have an idea what it's all about by then. My school now has an idiot Panhel advisor who thinks it's a great idea to have total COB in the fall. May I add that the freshmen (who are allowed to join in the fall) usually have no clue?? May I add that rush numbers are 20% of what they used to be? Grrrrr. (end of vent)

At the school I attended Fall was Informal and Spring was Formal. Reason? First semester freshmen are not allowed to rush. The informal season picked up students who were not freshmen and in the spring, Formal picked up freshmen mostly. I joined my professional first, the second semester of my freshmen year, then waited till the first semester of my sophomore year to rush Delta Zeta--picked up during informal rush (which I like better anyway).
