Talking "Sorority Life"

Hi All,
I was wondering if any of you have seen the new show, Sorority Life on MTV. What do you think about it. Would you ever want to do that with your chaper?

Hey Cynthia,
Great to see you on the boards (Beth will be happy too). Now we need to get Yesenia to sign up as well.
As you know I taped the first episode and probably will tape all of them. Then maybe talk to Jojo about planning a sisterhood activity to watch them. I'm curious to see what the other sisters think about them.
Personally, I am so glad that Phi Sig wouldn't let MTv tape any of the chapters. I have a strong feeling that by the time this is over that sororities won't be shown in a good light. Lets hope I'm wrong.
You might want to check out the general forums, greek life, for the thread "new MTv sorority show" or something close to that title. There's been great discussion about the show.
Love in our bond,
Carolyn

Yea Carolyn,
I think you are right. This sorority shows these girls drinkig and partying. And I am sure we wil not see any philanthropy or real sisterhood. Although it is a local sorority I think it will show ALL sororities as steriotypical.

I think we need to emphasiz the fact that we are a national sorority and talk about all the benefits of going national at recruitment. On our campus locals are sprouting up everywhere. We have a small Greek system and no one seems to know the difference.

I think it was interesting how they talked about the PNM in the same vicinity and at the events. That is just not a good idea. I am also sick of hearing their MOC be called a pledgemaster. I have no problem with calling the pledges, but a pledgemaster just sounds wrong and abusive in my mind.

A lot of people have talked about how they reacted to the rules on the other thread. I have to agree that these rules seem pretty standard. I know our ladies cringe when we talk about getting a house now because they know what the rules would be and we are all use to living on our own... pretty much.

Anyway, I am glad that us phi sigs didn't get involved. I am just sad that a Jewish Hillel sorority did, because it could be bad for other Hillel and Jewish Student Union groups.

thats my $0.02

Thumbs down

Hi ladies...I completely agree with you by saying that it's a GOOD thing that Phi Sig wouldn't let MTV put us on display. I also agree that the show is going to put a damper on Greek life. Although I just graduated from school and I really won't be around for Fall 2002 recruitment, I am afraid to see how the show will impact the decision to pledge or not. I hope that MTV airs some philanthrophy and sisterhood events so non-Greeks can get a true picture that sororities aren't just about drinking and boys. That's all I have to say Have a great summer!

I saw it tonight! Last week one of my sisters watched it and called me on the phone during commercials since I don't have satellite and gave me the run down. There are so many things I could find wrong, but again with editing who knows what really is going on. Yet I was thinking Hazing when they did that stone thing....hmmmm separating NMs from Actives...and secluded at night!!!
I know my chapter would not have thought of doing this since we've been having a rough few years...we have no desire to air our dirty laundry (unless its to fellow sisters who can give advice)
I too will be moving away soon, so I won't be around for recruitment...but I don't think it will as much effect up here in Canada.

Ok... Since everyone and their momma was telling me about last weeks episode, I thought I should watch tonight's. (mostly because it was on after RR...)

Ok, so WTF? I was really not impressed with the show at all. Ok, so there's people who don't wanna follow the rules. Which btw, it didn't look like that Jordan chick was doing anything wrong to me!

What I thought was truely amazing was that the "Pledges" were totally bad mouthing SAEPi on T.V.!!! The whole time I was like, "oh wait until the sisters see this!"

And how are you gonna have a selected few pledges in a house, and not have everyone in the house???? Come on now, that's just asking for trouble!!!

So why have I been approached by certain members of the greek system here, asking what the difference between their sorority and our sorority is. WHAT?!?!?! URG!

If next weeks is as bad as the show I saw today... I think I might just have to say something... It's really pointless to have it on the air.

Just like PhiSigCoco said, that's my $0.02

Did anyone else see the whole rock thing as hazing? Maybe if all of them would have done it, it would have been more of a sisterhood bonding activity. But I am not sure that we could get away with that!

hey phisigcoco, i agree with u i don't think that it would have been such a big deal about the rock thing if ALL members were there and it was sort of like a sisterhood bonding that everyone agreed to do. i acutally think it would have been fun, but since watching how they had to do it or at least strongly encouraged (same thing) since they do get points for events they attend. i just think that they are so unorganized. i didn't think jordan was that bad and yeah most of those active sisters are hypocrits. but i guess ll still be watching.
It's interesting because some friends of mine that are not part of a sorority or a fraternity thought the show was so boring so i guess truly the people that are really watching it are us, who actually understand the process.
i just can't wait (sarcasm) till this fall since i will be a rho chi and will have to deal with all the questions from the prospective members...........

Angry Sorority Life on mTV

Hey Phi Sigs!! I am so mad at this show. I watched a whole episode the other night. I am afraid what our recruitement numbers will be this fall. They are making sorority life out to be a bunch of drunk bimbos who don't follow the rules. I feel bad for the sorority who agreed to do it. They appear to be picky catty girls that I want to beat. LOL. Thank god Phi Sig said no way1

Hey Vexed,
Remember that the pledges are the ones drinking and disrespecting the sister's rules. I think that the actual members are representing themselves well, although I am curious as to how punishment will be handed out. I think that they did the honorable thing in extending bids to everyone and letting the pledge period decide who made it through... considering the position they were in with rush.
The problem that they are facing is one that we all face at some time: how do we get ladies who are truly sincere, will love and respect pss, and will love and respect our sisters? Sometimes you never know. People reveal themselves at different times. Sometimes it is upfront, other times it isn't until after initiation or even later.
Then again... I will probably have more to say as time goes on. You never know what might happen tonight.

I think you've got it...

My sister who watched the first episode said basically the same thing...this shows ppl how really hard it is to choose good sisters. My chapter has been averaging one disaffiliation a year, and that's a lot, plus some dissatisfied sisters who go alum (using part time status as their excuse, even tho they started part time).
No wonder our chapter hasn't been over 15 members in over 5 years! We made some bad choices, but we learned from them.

Anyway, the rock thing, definite hazing in my book. even if all the sisters did it, I wouldn't approve since they did it at night... daytime would've been ok for all of them.

Overall I found the show a bit boring...all i kept thinking was what editing they may have done....
For instance, one of the girls said she didn't know what points were taken off for, how do we know she just wasn't listening? nd Besides all NM had identical binders...perhaps that info would have been included in the binder?
I just feel we don't really know anything going on there.
