A few months ago for my birthday my husband bought me a gift certificate for an hour long massage. My question is, since I've never had a REAL massage before, are you supposed to tip when they are done?

Yes, generally 15% (or 20% for really great service).

I try to go for a massage at my spa about once a month. I hope you had a wonderful experience.

Usually when you check out of the spa, the person at the front desk will give you an envelope so the pleasant and relaxing atmosphere is maintained sans the awkward tip giving portion. I'll agree with RedRodeSAI on the 15-20%.
