Bad Sunburn, need help
I am an idiot. Today, I participated in Sigma Pi's Sorority Softball. What is the one thing that all extremely fair-skinned girls should do when they go outside......that's right put on sunblock. I am an idiot. I look like a tomato with hair. I need my fellow GCers advise on what I can do to relieve the pain and fix my skin color.
Help me. Please.
Greek Love,

Take 3 advil for the pain and swelling. Take a cold shower or bath. Put baby powder on your sheets when you go to bed so that you slip easily over them in your sleep...prevents skin pulling. Keep your aloe vera gel in the fridge so it is cool when you put it on.
Don't do that again
I am red headed and pale as all get-out, so I know this from experience.
Sorry you're in pain

I know and feel your pain. I too am a redhead and one time in 7th grade I went up on the roof of my house and put baby oil all over my body in the middle of August in south Texas-HELLO WTF was I thinking??? Needless to say I spent 1 week in bed, I am sure I had 1st and 2nd degree burns and was in soooo much pain. My mother would make me oatmeal baths and this helped a great deal. Also cold washclothes or icepacks helped with the burning sensation. Aloe Vera is your friend!! Good Luck and I hope you feel better.

My dermatologist once told me to take asprin while recovering from a sunburn, as it helps bolster your weakened immune system. Apparently your body has to work hard to repair your skin, and in doing so your immune system is weakened. who knew?
What sucks is that reseachers say that just one or two really bad sunburns can dramatically increase your chances of skin cancer later in life. I wish I knew that when I was younger, because I had a bunch of bad sunburns when I was a kid.

Lots and lots of lotion. Make sure you keep your skin hydrated. The worst is a week or two later when you start shedding like a snake. The lotion will keep your skin soft so you won't peel as much. And, don't burn again.
Wish I knew when I was younger how badly sunburns can affect you. I had a lot of bad sunburns growing up so now I have to constantly check for new freckles or moles and make sure they're ok.

Silly, NO. Make Tea a little stronger and gently put upon your body!
Vinegar is old wives tale, makes you smell like a salad!
Sounds nuts but out at a gymnkana for 3 days, nose burnt so bad it was hard, crispy !
Tea takes the burn out and helps to let it tan a bit!
Trust me the check is not in the mail, I never lie!

I have used aloe vera and Solarcaine (the spray) at separate times. Both have worked for me. I hope that you are feeling better.

Lots of ALOE, ALOE, ALOE!
As a champion of many sunburns (hey, the beach is practically my 2nd home!), it's come in handy that we have aloe growing in our backyard. When the pain kicks in, I usually just go out back and rip the plant off. I understand that not everyone has aloe growing in the backyard, so the bottle kind works just as well. Stay out of the sun for a while and wear appropriate clothing until you're feeling better. The aloe will help your skin stay intact, but just in case you're peeling like bananas, let the skin fall off on its own. Don't try to peel it yourself...accidentally scratching yourself is a bish and half!

A Doctor who is a friend of the family saw my sister in church one day with a really bad sunburn, stopped her, and told her to take 2 aspirin and 2 benadryl to stop the reaction (if it turns into sun poisining it is soooo much worse - trust me).
I have also found that there is this spray called Dermaplast???? It is in a white can with a blue top - the can says hospital strength. Anyway it is like an antiseptic (sp), but it nums you and you don't itch anymore you can get it at Wal-Mart and other pharmacy type places...

I am glow-in-the-dark pale and I get sunburned within 20 minutes of going outside, so I'm an expert at this. As soon as you realize you're getting burned, get inside and wet washcloths with ice water and put them on the affected areas. Then use Noxema, aloe, or Aveeno lotion every couple of hours to keep your skin hydrated. I always put Noxema on my face if my face gets sunburned, and the burn is always gone in a day or so. Of course, the best thing to do is use sunblock all the time so that you don't have to worry about it in the first place!

Here are the things I've used to relieve a bad sunburn:
Very few showers...the water tends to dry out your skin! You need to keep your skin moisturized! Use aloe vera or some of those funky green gells for sunburns (feel great when refriderated!). For the face...such as your nose and hairline...I recommend neosporin! I blister easily and have severly burned my whole body from a tanning bed before. So I know how bad it can be!
I have also used viniger in the shower to sooth the burn. It stinks, but helps.
Furthermore, I've found Vaseline Intensive Care loition with lipids to help too. Unfortunately most loitions trap in heat, but it feels great once your burn starts to dissapear!
Hope these suggestions help!
I have also used Noxema on my face for sunburn too.

bumping this thread up to get lilsnakeyk's question answered - once the sunburn is gone, any quick remedies for fixing colour? A friend is getting married in a few months, and burned herself to a crisp this weekend. I showed her the sunless tanner thread, but really, how dark do you want to get to match what will result from the burn!!!

Vigegar works, if you use it right after getting the burn. I had never ehard of that until I spent the day out in the sun with my husband just after we met. Redhead...sun...not pretty. He brought me to his house and poured vinegar all over me. It stunk, but the burn didn't hurt the next day, and most of the redness was gone.
My favorite is aloe and always will be. Dermoplast will work, too, but I don't like to spray things on myself when I burn.
BTW, I had blisters/ sun poisoning when I was about 9. (unknown school function outside, going to camp the next day.) The camp nurse made me put Calomine lotion on it.
