Sammi,

Dropping out is when you decide to drop out of Rush (for whatever reason). After pref parties you have to rank your sororities (usually you go to two). Suicide is when you decide to only write down your top choice. Quota is the number of rushees each sorority is allowed. This is usually set after 2nd or 3rd round (I can't remember). For example say there are 100 rushees after 3rd round and 5 sororities then quota would be 20 I hope this helps (if it confuses you more I'm sorry

COB - Continuous Open Bidding

Total - means the max # of ladies each sorority on campus can have

An example of the two: if total is 100 members, and XYZ sorority has 87 members, they can "continue to [offer] bids" until they get 13 more ladies to join. They are using "COB" to reach "TOTAL" - COB takes place after formal recruitment until the sorority has reached total (XYZ sorority can never have 101 members because 100 is total) - total is different at every university the same as quota will be different depending on the number of prospectives going through. Hope this helps.

Exclamation

dropping out=quitting rush before bid day. some girls drop out of rush because they were cut (not invited back to the next round of parties) from all the "good" houses. others drop out because all their friends were cut, and they don't want to join if their friends don't. usually rush consists of 4 rounds of parties, ocurring over 4 or more days, so someone who "dropped out" might quit after the second round of parties.

suicide=to put only one sorority (and not list a second-choice house) down on your preference card. unless this sorority wants you, you won't be able to pledge anywhere. this is a big risk to take, and it is usually not recommended by rho chis. don't suicide unless you know for sure that you would absolutely not pledge anywhere but your first choice.

quota=the number of new pledges that each sorority on campus is allowed (by the governing council) to take after rush. this is the set number of bids that the sorority can make. a sorority has had a successful rush if it meets quota, meaning it gets the maximum number of rushees allowed. usually quotas are set so that there is a place in one sorority or another for each rushee, as long as she would be willing to join any house on campus.
