To Suspend or Not to Supend???

Recently,

I just came from a phenomenal leadership conference at Bowie State where all the HBCU's got together to brainstorm and exchange ideas about an array of topics. Needless to say you can't have a conference like this and not have a couple forums on greekdom.

However, during our greek forums an issue came to the forefront that has been disturbing me and that is the fact that there is an actual debate on eliminating undergrad chapters.

Now being the neo that I am....Im not aware of whether this is limited to individual organizations or whether Pan Hell is actually considering this? Can someone please shed some insight because it seems to me that we are seeking to cause division ( grads vs.undergrads) in something that was created to bring unity.

Sorhors, enlighten me please!!!

Ps: Fortunely I haven't seen anything about lawsuits against the bluetiful ladies of the Rhoyal Blue and Gold....lets keep it that way

Well...

I could be wrong, but everything I have heard has been on an individual organization basis. I have heard of everything from temporary intake moratoriums to permanently shutting down intake on the undergraduate level. Everything I have heard has been on the informal discussion level, but it has been coming from people who have the power to make it reality, and something tells me that once one of the NPHC goes belly up (and we are REALLY close to that day), something similar will happen.

I have not heard of this being brought up on the panhellenic level. No lawsuits for SGRho, but all of the NPHC should be concerned and not doing anything that would jeopardize individuals, chapters or the whole org.

You are exactly right Soror! But what can we do? We tell people over and over again that hazing is illegal and if caught you will face dire consequences. But it's going in one ear and out the other! These forums is a prime example! People get on these things and just air their business!Sadly but true these lawsuits will be the down fall of all our orgs and all it takes is for one to fall and the rest will follow.

Sorhor TRSimons,

You are absolutely correct about the issue of suspending chapters. Most organizations are dealing with out of control members and yes, some have even discussed doing away with some of their undergraduate chapters but that is purely at the discretion of that organization.

Unhappy It's a shame.....

Soror TRSimon is accurate on another point, too: We are getting uncomfortably close to seeing an NPHC go under because of lawsuits. Considering that, I would be hurt, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the elimination of undergrad intake. Some of us have seen moratoriums on intake, and then when the moratorium is complete, some people just have to pick right up where others left off. As much as I would hate to see a part of the college experience taken away from undergrads, I almost cannot blame them for considering having alumnae intake only.

I wish there was a middle ground that could be achieved that would satisfy the general needs of undergrads to pledge like "old school" did as well as keep our national trusted officers from having to worry about lawsuits. Do anyone ever think that will be possible?

I think there is a common ground. We just need to work together to find it. Eliminating undergrad chapters is definately not the answer because they serve as student leaders on each campus. Some campuses have more greek influence than each school's Student Government Association.

....Thats enough of my 22cents.
