scared to workout!

Well last week i got my two workout DVD's that i had ordered from barnes and noble. I got the NYC Ballet workout, and the Denise Austin Pilates workout. Even though i havent done the NYC Ballet one, it looks fun. So last thursday, i pop in the DVD and start doing the pilates. It looks easy but its actually hard, i couldnt do all the actual exercises but i tried my best. When i was finished i got a little dizzy so i took an aleve and was okay. I did it at night so about an hour or two after working out i went to bed. The next day i did the same workout which is only 20 minutes long, but when i was finished, i was REALLY dizzy and felt like throwing up. I was also really cold, like having the chills and got cramps. I thought the cramps were only because of the workout which focuses on the abs, but i am not sure thats why. I took two aleves and laid down on my bed for about 30-45 minutes. After that i was better but still a little dizzy.

Now i am scared to do the workout again because i dont want to feel like that.

I dont even know what happened, did my blood pressure go down?? I doubt i over excercised because its not even an aerobic workout and its only 20 minutes?!?!? Then again, i never exercise, i just walk in my neighborhood every now and then so my body is not used to working out, but its just pilates!

Last year when i went to get my annual check up i had blood tests done and they told me i had mild anemia and needed to take a multi vitamin..... at first i was really good about taking one everyday but now i never take it because those centrum pills are HUGE, even when i break them in half..... so i dont know if thats part of the problem?!?!

Has anyone ever experienced something like this before?

Well I hope you feel better !! Also are you eating before you work out and drinking water? Sometimes when you work out on an empty stomach you get sick and light headed cause your body is using energy you really don't have .
Also I think if it keeps happening, you might want to swing by a Doctors office and explain whats going on, and maybe they can suggest something.
As for the Anemia(coming just from my experience) I too used to be really good at taking my vitamins and all that and then slowly but surely I too forgot, but I still work out but I also drink lots of OJ and milk and eat other things to get my source of Iron. But if your body isn't used to this amount of work thenb it will deffently take a toll on your system.
So take it easy, drink and eat right, and maybe talk to your docter about whats going on.
I hope everything works out for you, and that you feel better

You might want to see a doctor to find out why you're getting dizzy. Even if you're out of shape, it's not normal to feel dizzy or nauseous during a workout. That's different from feeling short of breath (due to hard exercise, like running, when your body's not in condition for it) or tired or sore.

Next time you do the workout, make sure you do a warm up (stretching) to get your blood pumping. Try doing a little bit of the workout at a time...maybe do fifteen minutes the first week and tack on five minutes the next week, and so on.

I hope you feel better and if you're still having dizzy spells, go get a check up because the workout might just be triggering something else!

I talked to BUCutie earlier, but I'll post here just in case anyone else ever runs across a similar problem.

I told her that her dizziness might have come from getting her heart rate up too fast in such a short amount of time. Exercise videos are a little different from a workout in the gym as they are excellerated and you don't have time to pause (unless you stop the video yourself). In the gym at least, you have time to walk from machine to machine inbetween sets...and grab some water.

As I told her she might want to just slow it down and not feel obligated to finish the whole video...it could just be she's not used to that kind of workout.

Furthermore, eating an hour or two before is okay, but it's really important (especially if you lift weights) that you take in protien afterwards. Protien is especially helpfull when you finish weight lifting because it helps keep your body from burning your muscle.

At any rate...take it easy, go at your own pace, drink lots of water, and if you continue to get dizzy or feel your heart race really rapidly hours AFTER a work out...contact a doctor!

If you haven't been working out, try doing only part of the workout to start with - work up to it. It's never wise to dive straight into a full workout regimen when you've been sedentary. You say it's only 20 minutes but also that it's difficult - try doing only 10 minutes.

Drink lots of water, warm up and cool down with some light stretching.

If it continues, talk to a doctor. It's possible you're overdoing it, and it's possible that you're just coming down with something.

have you tried stretching and doing a warm up? if you say you never exercise, then doing this is crucial. also pilates is pretty advanced - it took me awhile to build up to most things in my class. if this if your first go at exercising, try a more intermediate workout to start with. good luck!

i've seen a lot of athletes in top condition pass out or puke after an intense workout, especially when they are getting back into shape, like at football camp. ask yourself 2 questions... 1) am i out of shape, and perhaps i need something a little more low impact b4 tackling ballet excercises? and 2) am i breathing?
the most common mistake i see with new weightlifters is they don't breathe. if you push the air in your lungs back down, your body actually has a reflex that will make you pass out (i can't think of what it is called at the moment). but a couple weeks of light jogging, power walking, and stretching might be a good idea b4 you try to tackle pilates.

Well since you’re in Houston my first thought was the humidity and that you haven’t been keeping yourself hydrated. But that seems a bit of a stretch since most people that live in this area compensate for the humidity with appropriate water intake and the fact the workout is taking place indoors. The weird part is that some of the symptoms you have described I have been suffering lately. It’s some little bug that’s been keeping me worn down. We were working on our front the other day and I thought I was about to pass out from exhaustion it was really odd considering I had been working less then ten minutes. I just think its something that’s been going around lately; maybe you have the same thing.

P.S. – Centrum makes a liquid form of their daily vitamin.

That sounds like great advice. I seem to be having a problem too. The other day, I went jogging and after I had stretched, and warmed up by walking, I started to have a dull pain in the left side of my chest. I have no idea what it was. I have been scared to go jogging since then so I usually just work out with light weights, the stair climber or ride bikes. My exercising isn't as intense as it usually is, because of my fear. Still, the aching continues although it is not as bad as it was when I worked out a lot. I have gone to the doctor before with a pain in my chest and he said that it was an ulcer. This pain was in a different place and a different kind of pain. My mom seems to think that I don't drink enough water when I take my medicine, but I don't think that the pain would be on one side of my chest. Any advice other than to check with the doctor? (I am going to)

update on me: Since i started to get really dizzy when i would do the videos, I was scared to do any kind of exercise. Recently however, i have started jogging and i have been fine. Tired, but fine. I dont know what it is about those videos, but i will never try them again. Maybe i should sell them on ebay!
