Angry I'm so pissed!!!

My fraternity has a philanthropy called "Wish Week." It is to make the wish of an ill child come true through the make-a-wish foundation. Last spring was the last time we were able to have it because our school limits how many philanthropy events can be done per semester. The last time it was held $10,000was raised- the most in SDSU history. We did not get selected to have it this year, so we worked extra hard on a bid for it for this fall.... Anyway, I just found out that we did not get it again. I'm so pissed.

yes a philanthropy is a good thing...technically the school doesn't limit it. they pick 2 that are made mandatory if yours is not mandatory no one usually participates and you don't end up raising any money. so if its not mandatory you really don't get to do it.

Perhaps all the greeks could work together to help with the two mandatory events.

None of the philanthropies at UCSD were mandatory. At least not dictated by the school or IFC/Panhellenic. It was up to each chapter to come up w/ a system to get people involved. Pathetically, but successfully, there's a lot of bribery involved. Don't get me wrong, were not paying people off. But there's always a prize for the chapter that has the best attendance and/or contributes the most to the event. Maybe ya'll can do something like that?

The idea of the SCHOOL making any philanthropy event mandatory strikes me as wrong, wrong, wrong! Sure, a chapter can make an event mandatory if they want, but you should not be required to help a cause/chapter you don't want to.

If the school think ya'll won't do philanthropy without them requiring you go to X and Y events, they can simply require a certain number of hours from each chapter.

Question

Holy Shit Bat Man!

What do some of these Academia Butt Heads think?

Limit the # of Charity Events that a Greek Org. can do!

These People Must Hold The Award that I do now donate to them for being the highest Calibar of Moronic Butt Heads that I have ever seen!

This is one of the most insane things that I have ever heard!

My usual composed self! At Your service!

In going back and rereading, you have to bid to see if you will get that Charity?

Contact the State Atorneys General and see if they will investigat for any improprietys!

Looks like a fish and smells like a fish, Hell it must be a fish!

protest

You should really protest this thing, man. Seriously, that's a load of horseshit. You need to get the media out there. Dress in a bear costume and raise hell.

other uses for costumes...

We had this problem with a building on campus being nothing short of a safety hazard. One day, the first floor was flooded with raw sewage. The admin told us to just sit tight while our classes kept getting canceled due to a lack of class room space. We were in danger of having our classed canceled midway into the semester.

So we protested... wearing costumes. The media ate it up. WE made all the local stations and many in other cities. The school was forced to do something about it. Never underestimate the power of a bear suit.

What do you do for your philanthropy? Here at Illinois, a lot of the philanthropies are some kind of competition among the chapters. For example, we have a broomball tournament. Houses sign up because it is fun to play broomball. The entry fees go straight to our philanthropy, CMN. We get the ice time and trophies donated (or at very low cost), and we sell raffle tickets to cover the cost of shirts. Raffle prizes (usually gift certificates for restaurants, tanning salons, coffee shops, etc.) are also donated by local businesses, in exchange for putting their names on the t-shirt.

Within our Greek system, we have philanthropic canoe races, euchre tournaments, flag football, wheelchair basketball, ultimate frisbee, golf, swimming, bowling, softball, basketball, beauty pageants, volleyball, water wars, billiards, darts, trivia gameshows, and probably a bunch of others that I can't remember right now.

It is a powder-puff football game. We actually have re-planned it for next year since we did not get it. so the plan is to make it a campus event with sororities and fraternities as well as any clubs all competing in either a male, or female division of flag football. I hope it works, and thanks everyone.

At Indiana University, each IFC fraternity MUST:

1. Do X amount of community service hours per member

2. Attend other greek sponsored philanthropy events for a total of X amount of hours per member

3. Sponsor one Philanthropic event per year

It is part of our IFC "Minimum Standards" which requires each chapter to perform certain things (i.e. community service, philanthropy, risk management, campus involvement) at a certain satisfactory level.

No events are mandatory, but you have to go to some event to meet your hours.

Of course, now because each fraternity is forced to do a philanthropy, there are a million of them. One week this semester there were 6! Because there are so many, they are less effective ($$ and participation is being spread too thin). IFC and Panhel are now limiting the number per week.

Go to http://www.indiana.edu/~ifc and check out the minimum standards for our fraternities.

As for your sitiuation Josh80, we encountered a situation very similar to that this year. A philanthropy that we had worked on for years to make the biggest on campus, was stolen from us by a certain sorority.

They worked VERY hard to work us out of the picture but I personally saw to it that we were maintained as a sponsor and that we will continue to do so in the future. If you work hard to create an outstanding philanthropy, the organization that you are benefitting should at least be courteous enough to give you some sort of "job security".

MANDATORY!?

How in the world can a university dictate a MANDATORY "service" project to an organization? Service becomes servitude at that point. Watch out for that 'minimum standards' stuff. They tried to forcibly install something called the Delaware Plan at our school and alumni lawyers met with the university and explained that it would be a civil rights violation to impose this sort of thing on people who don't want it. The university immediately suspended their plan. For the record, we have a good relationship between the university and the fraternities, but once in awhile the greek admintrators come up with strange stuff that would be obviously illegal if they tried to push it on anyone else.

I agree with you to an extent. However, the chapter presidents all voted for this, not the Greek Life Office.

Fraternities are facing lots of bad press througout the country. Our IFC officers decided that this was a way to step up and combat that problem.

Also, there are a number of fraternities at IU that dont do ANYTHING. They dont do community service, intramurals or even make decent grades . They might as well just drop out of IFC and become social clubs.

Fraternities claim to be philanthropic organizations so I dont totally have a problem with this. I think when you have the large houses that we have, it can be tought to get all 90 people to put aside time for a project.
