Happy Texas Independence Day!!

For my fellow Texans(and Texicans ) on GC...

and a letter from the Alamo

Quote:
Commandancy of the Alamo------

Bejar Fby. 24th 1836

To the People of Texas &
all Americans in the world------

Fellow citizens & compatriots------

I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under
Santa Anna -----

I have sustained a continual Bombardment &
cannonade for 24 hours & have not lost a man -----

The enemy has demanded a Surrender at discretion otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken -----

I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves
proudly from the walls -----

I shall never Surrender or retreat.

Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism &
every thing dear to the American character, to come to our aid,
with all dispatch -----

The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days.
If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to
his own honor & that of his country -----

Victory or Death

William Barret Travis
Lt. Col. Comdt

P. S. The Lord is on our side-When the enemy appeared in sight
we had not three bushels of corn--- We have since found in deserted houses 80 or 90 bushels & got into the walls 20 or 30 head of Beeves---

They chose never to surrender or retreat; these brave hearts with flag still proudly waving, persihed in the flames of immortality that their high sacrifice might lead to the founding of this Texas. - Alamo Cenotaph, Dedicated March 1936

God Bless Texas, indeed.

All together now:

Texas, Our Texas! all hail the mighty State!
Texas, Our Texas! so wonderful so great!
Boldest and grandest, withstanding ev'ry test
O Empire wide and glorious, you stand supremely blest.
(chorus)

Texas, O Texas! your freeborn single star,
Sends out its radiance to nations near and far,
Emblem of Freedom! it set our hearts aglow,
With thoughts of San Jacinto and glorious Alamo.
(chorus)

Texas, dear Texas! from tyrant grip now free,
Shines forth in splendor, your star of destiny!
Mother of heroes, we come your children true,
Proclaiming our allegiance, our faith, our love for you.

Chorus

God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong,
That you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long.
God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong,
That you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long.

My great great great grandfather, although handicapped, fought as a major in the Texas Rangers in the Battle of San Jacinto. God bless all those men who created our state!!!
