Talking Greek TV/Movies

Has anyone else on here seen the sorority episode of Sabrina, The Teenage Witch- The College Years? A re-run of it was on this morning. It was, to say the least, interesting.

Sabrina and one of her roommates (can't remember the character's name, but let's just call her "Katie") were asigned to write an article for the newspaper. They were in competition with other pairs of writers for the best article, so they figured they should get something juicy in order to be printed. As they were talking to their third roommate (played by the actress who plays "Amber" on Clueless) in one of the hallways of their school, she was telling them about her sorority, Mu Pi. They decided they should reveal the "truth" about sororities by rushing. Sabrina was like, "Why would shallow people want to be with other shallow people?" (in assumption, of course, that all sorority girls are shallow) This is one of the parts that made me mad.

Well, the girls went to the first night of rush at Mu Pi, and the first thing said was by an active of Mu Pi: "Thanks to so-and-so for bringing us the delicious, yet oh-so-naughty cinnamon snaps." This, of course, was said as if to imply that all sorority girls are concerned with are superificial things, such as watching their weight.

Next, Sabrina and her fellow-journalist roommate talked to different actives, and they acted ditsy because that's the way they thought the Mu Pis wanted them to act. As it turns out (and I was happy about this part!), the Mu Pis are shocked at the girls were acting when they asked things such as, "Didn't you join so you can find a husband?" The Mu Pis explained things such as, "I'm here for my education, that's what comes first.", "I volunteer feeding the homeless," and "No, I'm not rich, I'm here on scholarship". I totally applauded this more realistic part of the episode. Sabrina even commented "now we have nothing to write about...they're great girls, and they do great things!" (yaay!)

Finally, as they are leaving the first day of rush, a girl says, "Well, I hope I'll see you Thursday" (ahem---rush infraction LOL!) and then "We're having a study group". Sabrina: "Oh, that's nice that you can help eachother with your homework". Mu Pi: "We're not doing our homework, we're doing the Seniors' homework. That's what you have to do to get in." So the girls decided to uncover this hazing scandal, but in the end, Sabrina felt bad for exposing them like this, so she wrote good things about them also. Good for Sabrina, LOL! She got rid of the hazing, but didn't diss sorority life in general.

Oh well, just thought this would be something interesting to post. Tell me your thoughts on this and if you've seen another portrayal of sororities/fraternities on TV or movies recently. Also---I appologize in advance if someone has already posted about this episode of Sabrina, but I did a "search" and did not find anything.
