Useful Course?

What was the most useful course you ever took in college?

Believe it or not Family Planning and Death and Dying.
Were electives and suppose to be easy A's, which they were, but what I learned has stayed with me. My death and Dying class helped prepare me for the passing of my father and his bout with cancer.
Family Planning has helped me to budget, etc.

My most useful courses have been:

Race and Ethnicity in the U.S. - We had a white professor who was majoring in African-American studies, and she taught the MESS out of that class! There were around 120 students enrolled and although roll wasn't taken there was rarely an empty seat. She spent an entire week walking us through the gruesome processes that slaves had to go through when they were being snatched from their villages in Africa. The FIRST time I had ever been TAUGHT that in in actual institution! Also, the class was diverse, so there was always a lot of debate. I loved it!

Psychology and Law - The prof taught the class as if he was a judge and we were the lawyers. We were given a list of cases the first day of class that would be discussed in subsequent meetings. In class, if he called on us, we had to tell him about the psychology of the people involved as he tried to argue us down. The absolute best learning experience I have ever had...I actually REMEMBER most of the stuff we learned in there!

what a good question!

A children's literature class i took in high school ...really opened my eyes to how fairy tales, etc, reflected the times ...

in college it was a drama class that focused on speech and articulation. certainly prepared me for my professional career as a journalist/public speaker

and all of my african-american studies classes which balanced the "other" learning I acquired through the years ...

Hmmmm....

Haven't ever given this question much thought. I guess the classes I actually still remember:

Public Relations (first time I'd learned about crisis management PR)

Broadcast Law and Regulation

Broadcast Asthetics (first time learning and understanding the "z" axis)

Images and Issues in the Black Visual Media (the films and specials we saw were intriguing)

International Film Festival (weekend course, but got me started in admiring and viewing international films)

Brown Bag Theater (five unit theater course that signaled the last time I performed as a "professional")

Madame Moderator,

z axis .... ah fond memories

glad to see SF State's BCEA stepped up and offered Images and Issues in the Black Visual Media (my offerings had to be taken through the Afro-Amercian Studies Department )

I must say the social aspects and psych courses were very helpful while working in television. I shall never forget, "Television mirrors society" ... hmmmmmmmmm

ACTUALLY, BECA STILL didn't offer it...I still took it through the AA studies department. Outside of broadcast management, broadcast law, and internship, I stopped taking courses within BECA by my jr. year because there was nothing left to take as a broadcast management emphasis. I took courses in the business department!

And don't forget...."the medium is the message." (Marshall McCune by way of Dr. Michelle Wolfe)

This was a great class and learning experience for me.

Black Psychology - A course that focused on why African Americans think and act the way that we do; the course study was focused on the impressions that people receive about what is the "norm" in America and how most African Americans conformed to fit this idealized image. I'm glad to say that this is not impacting us as much as it did decades ago...

My most useful courses:

Survey of the Bible-we covered the New Testament, and I must say it was a learning experience.

Study of African American Religious Thought-interesting course about the development of religious traditions of African Americans.

Speech and Communications-helped a sistah get over her fear of speaking in front of folks!!!

Great topic!

I would have to say that the class that benefited me the most was Intro to Business. I took it at a jc (junior college) and not only did it teach me alot of what I needed to know to be successful in the corporate world, but the teacher that I had was extraordinary. She was convinced that everyone single student in her class (which was composed mostly of black females, and like only 2 black men, which is sad in itself) was and could be great.

She had so much vigor for teaching and she made us want to be successful and prosperous. She used to refer to us as CEOs, CIOs, and presidents. During class she would create real life scenarios of each of us owning and running a corporation and how the knowledge that we were acquiring would translate into wealth and prosperity for us. I LOVED that!

If it wasnt for her, I don't think I would know if it was possible for me to be wealthy and successful, but she believed that each of us had the responsibility to be!
