Polygamy on A&E

Has anyone else been watching this show tonight (3/13, on A&E)? I have to say that I've learned quite a bit about plural marriage in the past hour (almost 2 hours), both pro and con. It's definitely not for me, but as I happen to be with Mormons quite often, I think it will make me less judgmental about it.

The bit about having a child every year is DEFINITELY not for me!!

That was the first thing I learned - you don't have to be a Mormon to be into polygamy. Being a basically private person, there's something to be said about telling your husband to go visit Wife #12 on a given night...

Honey - we are soooo on the same wavelength. I just started a thread about the other polygamy show which was on last night on HBO after Sopranos. Half naked Bill Pullman bouncing from one wife's bed to the next every third night.

I also just watched the woman with the 16 kids on TLC. OMG, that is like watching a train wreck! 10 loads of laundry a day. Are you $h%&ing me??? I could not take my eyes off of it. I put my 3 year old to bed an hour late b/c I could not get fof the couch! (He was kind of deer-in-the-headlights himself!)

Aren't most of those people on welfare or some other type of government assistance? I missed this show but I saw a show a few years back about some guy who had 7 or 8 wives, one of them being only 17 or 18 years old. Well anyway, he pretty much was operating a baby factory in his compound and none of them were working but they did recieve wic or something. That is WRONG. If you want to have several wives and enough money to start your own colony that's fine, but don't do it on my dime.

Pika2001, that was the Green family. This went more into the problems of intermarriage, potential abuse, etc. Some do go on PA, but I think that's the true nutjobs. The show was pretty fair about showing both the pros and cons, and I think the most wives ANY of the men had was four - and his house could not possibly have been built on welfare!

There are informational groups both for and against plural marriage, which is good, but people also need to remember that just because one family found a way to beat the system doesn't mean that they all do. I'm still not a big fan - I just appreciate shows such as this which gives me information that I would not have normally seen.

No, I don't think it was in PA. I want to say he was out west in Nevada or something, and he didn't live in a house. It was a couple of FEMA like trailers pushed together.

Oops! I used a work acronym - PA mean Public Assistance. This was all in Utah, both Mormons and Christian sects.

I would think having one wife and maybe two kids can be pretty hellish on some occasions, but 6 wives and 17 kids? Crazy! I will say this about religion, I come from a Catholic background and I don't belittle any other demonination but when it comes to LDS..I don't know.

The LDS church's public position is anti-polygamy these days. It wasn't always that way, but now only a certain small sect of Mormonism practices polygamy, and they aren't recognized by the heads of the LDS church as truly being LDS.

Anyway, I didn't see this, but it sounds interesting. What kind of Christian sects practice polygamy?

Oh wow, it's funny people on here saw this too. Like everyone I know happened to see it and no one I know usually watches A&E. Anyway, it was crazy to see it's still happening so frequently. I really like that one senator who's all about stopping it to. It def seems like it needs to stop...

I'm trying to think of a way to state this without being judgmental, but there are non-denominational churches and there are really out there non-denominational churches. Doctrinally, from what they showed on this program, you'd be hard put to find an argument against their being Christian (albeit with a heavy emphasis on the Old Testament), but...

To me, they sound like sects that are more of an amalgamation of the old LDS religion and Christianity. They didn't talk about the "we're going to become gods on our very own planet" bit, or some of the other traditionally LDS stuff.
