I am sick and tired....

I'm so sick of all these people who "pledge" undergrad and put on heirs about the importance of community service and involvement in their respective college communities, but when they graduate and move on they don't do sh*t!

Now, I am a bit guilty of this myself at times, and I have my Dean and my Prophytes to thank that my feet are planted firmly enough to realize the err of my ways and call myself on it before someone else has to.

So I ask you GC, fellow greeks, what do you all do to stay "involved", and keep up the good, and push things lest they grow cold?

(all my true brothers know what I mean!)

I always try to remind myself that I am a Delta for LIFE!!! That doesn't mean just wearing letters and stepping (which I'm not that great at anyway). Since I've graduated, I've become very active with the local alumae chapter. This means that I'm involved in some type of community and/or sorority related activity at least one day a week. I also think its important to try getting others involved that may have slipped away for one reason or another.

Here's a thread on AKA Ave. with a similar theme.

The title is "This question is for GREEKS only!"

I'm glad to see that you recognize the importance of holding up the light after undergrad. I regularly do community service through my grad chapter Omicron Theta Lambda.

And there are those who continue to serve without being associated with a grad chapter. I didn't belong to a grad chapter when I graduated, but that didn't stop me from volunteering my time, getting involved, and giving back to the community. I don't know if people knew I was an AKA or not (except for my little sister and her mom), but I didn't do things to showcase my letters. I know that everyone has a tendency to backslide or get lazy, but if you are truly committed to the cause you'll do it one way or another.

Cool The resppnsibility goes on.

I feel ya bruh. After graduating, I went right into my alumni chapter. Since then, I've become a Mason as well.

Serving the community can occur in alot of ways. Convincing a person to try and quit using/selling drugs, breaking up fights, visiting older people in homes are all ways to serve the community.

Cool Dayum good question, bruh!

I think the priorities of the chapter will determine the participation. If the chapter is predominantly "old", and the older brothers dictate the programming of the chapter, the chapter will have a hard time retaining the younger members, and reclaiming members. If the programming is done by both old and young, with consideration to both groups of bruhs and their patrons, the chapter will be strong and ever-growing. It takes a delicate balance. I also think that chapters should emphasize "hood" as much as it does business. They should plan events that young bruthas like, and young women like to come to. These types of events will hold the attention of those that will be the future of the chapter.

I also believe that it(the chapter) should do all it can to assure each and every member's worth. Some members feel like they're high and mighty cause they did this, or served on that. It may be true that the brother deserved high praise; but that doesn't mean he should be treated like THE KING of the chapter. All Alphas know that RESPECT IS EARNED; but we also know that we are ALL BROTHAS, on the same level, always.

You are so right. After undergrad most people just wear the colors . If you are not apart of a grad chapter we all should hold truth what our frats and sororities really mean. Community, service and just getting involved.

Well to all MY BROS March of Dimes is April 28th, register under the Alpha Phi Alpha banner and let us do that for our unborn youth so that they can be born without birth defects. Last year we raised the most money on the March of Dimes so let us double that this year!
