Those Caring Alpha Gams: Sisters Who Lended You A Hand or Ear.
We all know that Alpha Gam tried to help out its sisters as much as possible with the SIS grant, scholarships and other things. This post is to share an experience where a fellow AGD (active or alumnae) helped you out when you needed something or someone (to listen to you) or if they have done something gracious that was completely unexpected. It can be minimal such as a sister throwing a surprise B-day party, lending you her badge, taking you out when you had a bad day or something big such as your house was blown away in a hurricane and a sister surpised you with a check of $10,000 to help you out.
I have 3....
1. The first would be my fave advisor. Being the only senior it could get lonely and she made sure to make me feel as if I has another senior in the house with me. We went out to eat alot and she even took me out for a fun weekend night. If i had a problem I could talk to her. I even went with her when she got her naval pierced and she bought me a jewel for mine. I kinda adopted her as my Pearl/Big Sis since my Pearl Sister (an alum of a chapter that has recolonized and has the role of a Big) didnt have time to do much and we didnt get to have Bigs.
2. Another is when I went to visit my old chapter in the fall, they asked alums to come help with rush. The visit didnt go as well as anyone hoped. I was kinda cranky cuz the train had messed up my luggage and sent it to Chicago and my house was a little (ok much) cranky cuz of having to deal with rush. One of the girl's moms who is an alum pulled me aside and told me that I she knew I was a good kid and knew I was disappointed with my visit and that I had spent alot of money to come down and taken days off of work when I really could have used the money. She pretty much made me feel like an awesome AGD and than handed me a sum of money. She told me not to reject it and that it wasnt pitty money, but money that I deserved for being who I am and doing what I did(can we say I was stunned and trying not to cry). I think she is completely awesome.
3. Then there is agdbirmingham. She had some shirts that she wanted the active girls in the chapter to have. Having graduated 1 1/2 before I got there she gave me one, even though I am an alum and it made me feel good cuz I felt like I got a hand me down gift from a Big Sis.
**EXTRA** All the Alpha Gams on this board for helping me whenever I seemed to have a crisis or just being there in general and for putting up with my sometimes crazy, pointless and weird post/threads :P

Tonya! What? I don't get any AGD love from you?!?
hehe, just kidding!
First, lotsa love to all GC-Gams for your love and support. (Especially the girls I mentioned in my "special thanks" thread).
Second, the Alpha Beta chapter in general. Tonya really helped me at a time when sisterly support was a little difficult to find and she pointed me toward their Advisor, Melissa E., who was a BIG comfort! The girls there have really made me feel comfortable and welcome.

You're so sweet! I hope you enjoy the sweatshirt!
You know, I never thought about the women of AB not having big sisters when they pledged! Although, there's a lot of great opportunities being part of a chapter that is restarting, I guess I took for granted everything I had while I was there and all the traditions/songs/etc that get passed down! I really admire you for making it through and especially being the only senior! And thanks for all your hard work restarting/recolonizing AB! Sounds like you've done a lot to help the chapter, and I'm sure they all appreciate it, and I do too!
If you need a big sister I'd be happy to "adopt" you! And if you ever need a place to stay in Birmingham, AL, let me know!

Just thought I would tell you a story about one of my chapter sisters. I have had great things happen to me personally, but I never knew anyone who got a SIS grant. Thought I would share part of her story. She had a brain tumor and needed surgery to find out if it was cancerous or not. She applied for a SIS grant to help with the cost of the surgery. She recieved the money and had a sucessful surgery. It turns out she does not have cancer but is struggling with facial muscular problems. We were there for her and several of the sisters drove 4 hours just to be there when she woke up from her surgery. We love her so much!! Just thought I would share her story.

I just thought that as a newcomer to GC I would share my story. I am actually in the process of applying for the grant. My mother was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 1979. Her case developed rather slowly at first, and she was able to fulfill many of the duties that moms do, even though she was a single mom doing this all on her own. In the past 6 months, my mom's health began to deteriorate. I decided at the end of my freshman year that I would stay in Macon to take care of my mom in case anything ever happened to her. I am glad that I did because right before finals at the end of fall semester she got to where she could barely walk (this is what happens with MS. if you know nothing about it, drop me a note and i will tell you). As an only child and a full time college student, I could not take care of her the way she needed to be cared for, so she went into a nursing home on February 8. Since then, all of my money has gone towards paying off bills that were hers, and the utilities at our house until it sells (which could be awhile). I went to my advisor to ask her what to do about the fall because I know I won't have the money to pay for dues. She called our Province director, who in turn called someone at HQ and they are sending me an application for the grant. This has been a very difficult time and I KNOW that I would never had made it without the support of my sisters, especially my big sis Nickole.
~Just thought I would share my story. For anyone who reads this. always remember that your sisters will always be there. There is nothing that they won't do for you; all you have to do is ask!

Erin that was so great of your chapter to be there. Sweet story
Brittney, good luck with everything and I know things will get better for you and your mom. Being the only child of a single mom..I know where you come from. If you ever need an ear just PM or email. Also Gale Wilkerson who heads the SIS grants is a wonderful man to work with.
