Question

Greetings ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho:

I found a picture of R&B Singer ASHANTI (all the way to the left) on her website and it looks like she is throwing up your handsign? Is she a member a Sigma Gamma Rho? I found it on the defjam murderinc site at www.defjam.com/murderinc/ashanti_frame.html

Sincerely
Malica Ahmad

Soror Ashanti????

WOW! This is a surprise! I haven't heard of it, but she could be. She's 21, so she could have graduated from college already...
I'll ask around and get back to ya. Thanks for bringing to the table!!

Hot Topic

Well, this has been a discussion about sorors.

Murder Inc. uses this sign to represent the Murder. It hasn't been ruled out that she may be a soror. But there is no confirmation.

I guess a way to find out is to ask her.

Thumbs down

i doubt it. If you visit the Murder, Inc. site, a lot of them are throwing up our sign.

I guess it's kind of like the Jay Z/Rockafella Dynasty - Delta thing.

Too Funny

Now you all now, that Jay-Z and his crew throw up the "Delta Pyramid" The sign that you see here DOES NOT MEAN she is a soror. To my knowledge, she didn't attend college and if you look at J-lo's video, she does it as well. This is a JaRule click type of sign.....No EEE-YIPPPP for Ashanti

Question

Hopefully this will not sound wrong, and I realize that alot of these stars never attended college, but you would think that someone in their camp would give them a clue as to what else these
hand signs could possibly mean!! (Not to say that Greeks have not borrowed a thing or to)But our organizations have been around alot longer then they have, and will be here when they are no longer in the spot light. When I recently saw Jay-Z on an awards show throwing up the sign that we associate with Delta, and I also remember he did it on the album cover.... I just thought he was WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!! And although I like Ja-Rule...I do not want Murder, Inc. label artists to be thought of as members of SGRho!

honestly speaking...

if one of our soRHOrs did become some big star, then i really believe that it would be made known to all of us.

just like when a soror does something great but doesn't get the "spotlight" recognition for it, we still know about it by word of mouth, internet, or our publication, "The Aurora".

Ashanti has been out for a minute and no one has ever said she was a soror.

now if someone from your chapter became a super star, wouldn't you be the FIRST to shout it out "THAT'S MY SOROR!!!"

Ashanti is not a member of Sigma Gamma Rho. She IS a member of the Murder Inc. label and that is the sign they use. JaRule, J-Lo, all of them throw the sign up. Just like Snoop throws up the sign to represent the Westside etc.

Outside of the Greek community, I don't think anyone knows that a handside is associated with Sigma, Deta, Zeta, AKA etc. You have children throwing up the Westside sign (Sigma) thinking they are doing what they see the rappers do. And let's take it a step further...The average white person definately doesn't know what a hand sign is because surfers have been throwing up the Alpha sign forever and hardcore Rock music fans have been throwing up the Que sign.

I don't feel alot of these artist and whoever else are being disrespectful because of the simple fact is they have no clue...they feel they have created something new and I guess I would say, who's fault is that they have no clue?

Sorhors and Sisterfriends,

Thanks for schooling the folks about the two very different worlds of greekdom and entertainment! The stars didn't do their homework or they probably don't care that they are taking the hand signs from BGLOs which have been around a lot longer than they have been stars!

What would lead you to believe that a high profile entertainer would deliberately "steal" a handsign from BGLO's? What would they have to gain from that?
I don't think the point that is being made is a "deliberate" stealing of a sign, because being high profile doesn't exempt anyone from doing anything, given the kind of world we live it. What would they gain if they did?...in monetary terms, which is how the world usually judges worth...nothing. The point that I see is BGLO's and the entertainment industry operate on two separate planes. What is important to one is not important to the other, and vesa versa. It is not a matter of doing homework, it is a matter of fact. Handsigns are important to most Greeks, because it is another way of identification...just like the colors. REIKI, I don't completely understand your statement about BGLO's needing to do their homework so I won't comment on it because I don't want to misquote your meaning...(enlighten me if possible) I do know that handsigns are fairly new for most BGLO's, and in my opinion the entertainment industry is mirroring how gangs do it....these handsigns didn't get popular in the music industry until all these gang bangers became rappers, and alot of people equate Sororities and Fraternaties as being glorified gangs....so maybe we should be asking ourselves what type of image or example are giving....not who is using who's handsign.

Roca Fam/Murder Inc.

I think it's being taken more personally because Murder Inc. "Murderers" are using our handsign as a symbol of their record label. Now, the difference between this and the Jay-Z fam is the "Roca Diamond" was an altered version (for lack of a better term) of the Delta Pyramid. If you notice, this thumbs don't form a flat side, instead it looks like the bottom of the pyramid caved in... forming a diamond-shape handsign. I don't think anyone is deliberately offending Sigma, but I don't feel comfortable with it either.....

whenever I see a hard-core, bling-blinging rapper with a raised pinky...I'm really trip the freak out!

Can you imagine seeing Suge Knight with a raised pinky?

LMAO!

I remember after Shaq crossed, he continuosly threw his arms up doing his Omega thing. I saw so many boys/teenagers (including my cousins) doing the same thing when they were playing basketball. I was like . I explained to my cousins what that was and enlightened them. They were totally unware of what it was, they just saw Shaq doing it, therefore, it was okay.
