"Frat" vs. "Fraternity"
I see a lot of people on here use "frat" even though I thought that was a strictly GDI term. Are there others on here that only say fraternity as well?

It all depends on the type of fraternity and the context.
I call NPHC fraternities "frat" sometimes and they often refer to each other as such.

i would give it at least two years. and even then id encourage the poster to search and bump the existing thread. unless a thread that was time-sensitive an the existing thread(s) doesnt apply anymore.

Maybe GDI's don't like being referred to as GDI's...

I know some GDI's love to be called GDI's and some don't for the 'god damn' implication. I use the term 'frat' when speaking to my brothers, however when I speak to outsiders, especially those who don't seem to 'get' the Greek system, I say fraternity just to leave the 'frat' connotation out of the mix. At my chapter, I was kind of a nazi about this. If I saw a member calling us a 'frat' to a pledge, I would step in and explain how we were not a 'frat.' Of course, some fraternities are a 'frat' and all fraternities have 'frat' chapters, and well if they want to use it, more power to them!

I personally feel it's a matter of who's saying it. A lot of my friends use frat just because it's quicker to say than fraternity - yes, a whole three syllables longer I realize, but still.

I'm curious to know why you go by Phi Gam? I know that very few Phi Gamma Delta chapters use that nickname, most use FIJI. Why does your chapter (or you) use it?
