Hello Alpha Phi!
Hello! I'm new to all of this stuff, but I just wanted to tell everyone hey! I'm an Alpha Phi from the Gamma Eta Chapter at the University of North Texas! I love all my sisters! And I kinda think I'm going to have to transfer schools in the near future and I'm only a freshman. Is it a good idea to affiliate with their chapter if they have one? I know that a girl from another chapter transfered to our school and thought about affiliating and I believe she decided not to? And what exactly does it mean to affiliate? Opinions would be greatful!
Thanks!
AOE

Hello and welcome!! I am a member of the Iota Beta chapter at St. Mary's in San Antonio. I do not know much about affiliating with another chapter, but there are other A-Phis on this board who I am sure can help you out. I just wanted to welcome you. Do you know where you will be transferring to? Just curious.

Thank you so much for welcoming me! I appreciate it! I haven't really decided on what school yet. I recently moved back to Texas after living in Indiana for the last 3 years of my high school years, so it's a possibility I would transfer to somewhere up there(maybe IU, BallState, Purdue) but I'm also looking into UT of Austin, SWT, and other various schools. It all depends on my major That is if I ever figure that one out....hehehe

You are welcome! Why not transfer to St. Mary's?! Just kidding. Good luck deciding on a major. I am in my 2nd year, going on my 3rd, and I am still undecided. I think I've made up my mind, but I am not sure about it. Wonderful, I know. Haha. I wish you nothing but the best.

Re: Hello Alpha Phi!
APhiBee:
First welcome to Greek Chat. I hope you will visit and post often. It is always nice to have other Phis on the boards.
Secondly, you asked about affiliation. Usually what happens is this. Once you have transferred to a school with an Alpha Phi chapter, you will get in touch with the chapter at your new campus and tell them you are an Alpha Phi from the University of North Texas. If they have room for another member, they will probably invite you to attend functions for a semester to see if you like the new chapter and vice versa.
Alpha Phi International states that an unaffiliated collegiate member, having transferred to another campus that has an Alpha Phi chapter, always receives the second chapter's hospitality and social invitations if the member has been appropriately recommended by her original chapter.
There is more information on this in the Alpha Phi Collegiate Chapter Operations Manual. You should check it out. Then, once you have made your decision, ask for a recommendation from the UNT Alpha Phis and get in touch with the President of the Alpha Phi chapter on your new campus.
As a Texas Tech advisor, I suggest you look into Texas Tech University. It's a great school and we have a great chapter. Of course, I am a little biased.
Finally, enjoy your time at UNT. I have heard they have a great chapter as well.
Hope that info helps!
AOE,
Jen

Thanks for the information on affiliation TechAPhi. It was very helpful. I actually am looking into Tech, UT at Austin, SWT, A&M, and others, but I believe the only ones out of those that have an A Phi chapter would be Tech which could help my opinion..lol!

You asked whether it was a good idea to affiliate with the Alpha Phi chapter at your new school. This is a decision only you can make. Once you get to your new school, contact them and attend some of their events. Get to know the sisters. In all likelihood, you will find that they are fantastic women, just like the ones at your old chapter. I've met many Alpha Phis in my 12+ years as an A-Phi and I've honestly never met one I didn't like.
I think my collegiate experience would have been far less fun without my Alpha Phi sisters, therefore, I would strongly suggest you affiliate with the A-Phi group on your new campus. You don't want to deprive yourself of the wonderful collegiate years in Alpha Phi. They go by so fast and the memories will last you a lifetime. So, do investigate the possibility of affiliation. Once you're there, you don't have to affiliate if you don't feel you fit in, but you'll never know unless you try. So go for it!
If you have any more questions, there are so many knowledgeable Phis on this board. Ask away. I am sure someone can help you.
Take care and enjoy this precious time in your life.
AOE,
Jen

Notes:
--> The Omega chapter of Alpha Phi is at the University of Texas at Austin.
--> You're right, Southwest Texas State University does not have an Alpha Phi chapter.
--> Texas chapters of Alpha Phi include:
-- University of Texas - Austin (Omega)
-- University of North Texas (Gamma Eta)
-- Texas Tech University (Gamma Iota)
-- Midwestern State in Wichita Falls (Gamma Omega)
-- Texas A&M at Commerce (Delta Beta)
-- St. Mary's in San Antonio (Iota Beta)

Jen,
You are so awesome! I have learned quite a bit from this thread. Although I love St. Mary's and Alpha Phi, I am considering transferring to another school; however, where I most likely will transfer to, if I transfer, does not have an A-Phi chapter. But we will see. Perhaps I will stay at St. Mary's.

Hi APhiBee. Welcome to Greek Chat. I know Jen has already responded to some of your questions but I also wanted to tell you that you can use your advisory board as a means to get ahold of the chapter on the campus that you are transferring to. I get calls from advisors all the time telling me someone is coming to look at this school or that school and wants to check out the Alpha Phi chapter and know more about housing options, affiliating, etc. Most people know pretty quickly whether or not they'll fit in with a chapter. If you are transferring to a housed chapter you may even be able to arrange moving into the chapter house. Your recommendation usually comes from either your chapter advisor or chapter president who will inform the chapter that you are a member in good standing, have paid your chapter bond, etc. Jen is correct that the CCOM refers to the exact procedures.
Good luck in school and once again, welcome to GC!
