What do you think?

A piece was written in the Southern University DIGEST concerning the probation of greek organization due to hazing, but that isn't the point of this post.

From reading the feedback it seems as if many feel that the article shouldn't have been written because it placed negative attention on the organization.
As student-journalists we often get flack for printing NEWS, if the local city paper writes something bad about a greek organization no one says a word, but when the student paper prints something everyone is up in arms, this happens with crime stories and greek stories mainly.

Do you think administrators should censor what goes in the paper for the sake making everyone LOOK GOOD instead of being honest with the public? It seems that they don't mind when good things are published but when the bad news is published everyone is upset. How are the newspapers facing this challenge supposed to get real experience if they have to worry about upsetting certain groups of people?

Question Did you read the Pearls of Wisdom?

Hi Curious1,

It looks like you're new to GC; welcome.
Did you read the "Pearls of Wisdom" announcement before you thought of posting the above?

Curious1 - what exactly is your purpose in posting that article and all of the accompanying stuff under it....some of which has nothing to do with the original article?

Is your point censorship? Well, to answer that...and only that...our constitutional rights allow us specifc freedoms of speech.

Other than that, my Sorors and I will most likely NOT be interested in any discussion related to the incidents cited in the artcle.

Yes the topic is censorship

Of course I don't want to discuss the TOPIC of the article, that was just the most recent article in question, before that it was an article about a murder on campus.

Everyone is knowledgeable of the First Amendment, but many seem to think it shouldn't apply to everything, if it casts a situation in a negative light.

I wasn't trying to bring up the point of hazing but the point of censorship.

Thank you for revising your original post!

Regarding the actual subject at hand, censorship, it is my opinion that the media has a right and an obligation to print any news-worthy story, no matter who may become upset about it. As long as the material presented is FACTUAL and not fabricated and/or exaggerated. You can't please everyone.

I used to work for my university newspaper, and there have been many incidents inwhich the university would get upset if the newpaper published articles not describing the university as all wonderful. I have mixed opinions. Our school paper recieved money form the university (a part of students fees paid for a subscription of the newspaper), so the school felt they had a right to be upset if certain stories came out. However, there's the freedom of the press and speech.

I think some things can be done with discretion in mind, or taking a different approach to the story (maybe a feature/humanity story instead of a "facts" story)....if a newpaper wants to have the freedoms associated with major newspapers, then they shoud be totally separate from the University....
