Is it worse to tell a lie or break a promise?

I believe break a promise, something I never do, I'm very careful about what I agree to do for someone. I will tell a lie to cover my behind, but not just lying about the car I drive, how much something cost, where I been, what I heard, etc. But if daughter comes in room with bright pink makeup on all over her face and asks how she looks, I will say, "BEAUTIFUL DARLING".

Personally speaking both of those things are my pet peeves, its a guarenteed way of pissing me off by either lying to me or breaking a promise. I've been known to stop talking to people forever over things like that. I'm not talking about stuff such as telling someone they look good when they don't but things such as making a commitment to do something and than backing out or lying to get out of it. My way of thinking is if you say you're going to do something DO IT, and if you can't be MAN or WOMAN enough to admit that, don't lie your way out or avoid the person because you couldn't come through.
