Post Dues

Does anyone know how much and how frequently you have to pay dues? I know that they vary with the different frats but do you know like a ballpark figure? Thanks

First of all, it's fraternity.

Second, dues depend on alot of things, total number of members, chapter fundraisers, and whatever IHQ decides is apropriate. I pay dues once a semester for TKE, but you can always work out a payment plan with your treasurer if need be.

Don't worry about the money situation, if you like the group, you can make it work.

Most of the time, living as a Greek in a House is cheaper than living on campus! It also depends on the imenities that go along with it. But if you have to spend alittle more trust me it is and will be well worth it!
I know my chapter compares our pricing for living to what not what the market will bear but try to be competative or even lower!
If you do not go Greek, how many of your fellow Dorm Rats will you remember and have contact with after Graduation? I still do as am very active and I Graduated in 1967!
What is it worth to do and be with Fellow Brothers? Sisters for the rest of your life?
We just had a 35 Ann. of the founding of the local i started and 80 + Alums showed up. More than ever before! That is saying something as they came from all corners of the country!!!! Now their Kids or Grand Kids are coming there and in the Chapter!!!!!

Damn does that make me feel MATURE!!!!!

For sororities, it's very expensive, anywhere from $500 per quarter to Thousands per quarter I have heard. Most fraternities are MUCH cheaper, I think most of the houses charge $150-$300 per quarter, depending on if they assess or not, we don't assess, meaning you pay for everything up front, and not per event. Some fraternities charge for each formals and road trips, we don't.

Our dues are about 300/semester after your first semester. Some events are covered by dues. Others, like semiformals and favors/tshirts, aren't. The first semester was about 800, it included most of the National dues and one-time fees. It's a lot of money when you consider how much everything else is, but I know other AX chapters who pay well over 1,000 a semester for DUES! Plus, there's a payment plan option, and you can pay by CC.

Our dues are $45 while you are pledging and then from there on they are $120 a year.

We pay dues once a semester too. It is encouraged that we pay it all up front (saves the treasurer a lot of time and trouble)but for members who are tight on money payment plans can be worked out too. We get charged for each big event such as formal or spring fling but the social director "balances" out the cost for each member of the event with the treasurer. For example, for our formal last year we had to pay 22$ a person. It would have been 28$ a person but the 6$ was already taken from the chapter's money, which of course most of came from dues. They take in to consideration stuff like that, by asking "would u guys wanna raise the dues a couple dollars and have a lower amount to pay for such and such event.."

All i know is, every penny that I paid was all worth it.

Question

In this context, I have another question.
I have heard that you only pay dues while you are active - is that right?
It were kind of funny if you wouldn't have to pay dues when you are alumnus and actually capable to pay them....

That's how it works in my fraternity - small chapter dues during the time as an active (about 20-30 $ per semester and higher ones as alumnus (around 100-200$per year). And the national dues are completely negligible (a couple of bucks per year) - we are much more decentralized. That way the alumni take care of the actives in their chapter and also keep the house in shape. Actually, it has the positive side effect that the contact between alumni and actives is very vivid.

Our alumni/alumnae aren't REQUIRED to pay dues, however they do (and are encouraged, hehe, to) make donations of whatever amount whenever they can. These range from like 30$-above. Also after initiation there is an option if you want to become a "life member" which means you pay up front a certain amount of money (i forgot how much it was this year, but bigger than the regular active's dues) and basically from then on, you are exempted from paying dues for as long as you live. Of course, there is already the mentality that once initiated, we are members for life, but you guys know what I'm saying right? Like basically you just have the privilege of not paying any more dues for the coming years and of course, escape inflation, vs the people who just insist on paying regular dues yearly (and stopping once they graduate). The "life member" payments goes in this trust fund that basically helps Nationals, our philanthropy and scholarships.

AlphaChiGirl, do all NPC sororities allow payment of dues with credit card? (Im assuming that's what your CC stands for )Just curious.

Alpha Gams pay alumnae dues before they get initated...that's why our new member dues can be quite expensive. However, after initation, my chapter pays $180 per semester.

we have two types of dues: national & chatper.

both are paid annually.

the national amout is set by the sorority & the chapter amount is set my the chapter.

typically collegiate chapter dues range from $10-50 and alumnae dues range from $165-300.

you must pay the apporpriate chapter & national dues to be considered an financially active member.

at-large (general) members pay the national dues and a member at large fee, which is also set by the sorority.

There are some definate financial advantages to A) not living in a house and B) belonging to a smaller national org.

You pay national dues once a year. They just went up to (some of you aren't going to believe this....)

$45

$45*

And we had to fight for that increase!

Alumni don't have to pay dues. But they don't get any publications, etc. if they aren't paying dues. We have life members, but are trying to modify that so it's a little more realistic.

You also pay chapter dues (which are set by each individual chapter). When you get initiated you don't pay chapter dues, you pay "initiation fees" and national dues. (This covers your certificates, badge, etc.)

We have some alumni in chapters and some that are just AAL- Alumni At-Large.

I've never paid over $90/year for my fraternity. Although I gladly would as long as it was being used appropriately (which I believe it is now & would be in the future). Some of the big national GLOs with big houses (while I'm jealous of the benefits sometimes ) blow my mind away with the cost!!

We also re-activated our "Loyalty Fund", which is a way for members to donate to general Fraternity funds. I'm saving up right now to donate to it.

* I should note: we don't have any paid staff or a centralized HQ. We're all volunteer. We fly around once a year for meetings together, and the rest of the time it's via teleconferences. So we don't have any general overhead like most other GLOs. One of our long term goals is to have a physical HQ and at least 1 person who is paid staff!

Is living in a house really cheaper than living in the dorms in most places? I know hardly anyone here can afford to pay their rent, and our houses are shitty to boot. we're paying $26,000 to rent an 11-bedroom federal disaster area (the Delta Chi's who lived there before us left it a mess), and we count ourselves lucky for having got it so good.

My chapter has us pay monthly bills. We pay a base dues fee, parlor fee, furnishing fund fee, then on top of that is shirts, socials, formals, rush events, founder's day, fines, etc. If you get everything (which most people do, but you don't have to) it costs around 800 per semester, and is more expensive for new members, as they have one-time fees.
