Question How Do You Know if Someone is Really a Member of Your GLO?

Know how when you meet someone for the first time who is a member of your GLO (I'm talking about guys for the most part) people will do the handshake? Do other organizations have a way of finding out if the other person is really a member before they do the handshake? I was wondering because if you did the handshake to someone who wasn't really a member, that person would then know your handshake.

I don't want specifics of course, I was just curious to know if you check people out first!

LOL, I drank too much caffeine today; sorry to inflict my insomnia on all of you! Still, I think its a worthwhile question

We have a Ritual greeting that every initiated member should know . . . and we can use this to test. If I really cared I would call the National . . . although if the person was really clever they would use a real name from an initiated member at another school.*shrug*

Hey Trace-
I think it is kinda an inside knowledge thing- I worked with this lady on Special Olympics for a year- kind of felt like she was a really special person- I really liked her and she was much older than me. Two years later, I get this list of all the XO's in my state and .. her name was there. I knew it in my heart. Don't know how the men can tell but I really think women can! luv sue!!!

Here's what my chapter does for the shake.

Usually what happens is one of our guys wearing letters is approached by someone on the street saying "Oh you're a teke? i'm one from ABC chapter" Then when we shake hands, the unknown person usually does the grip a bit before we do, so that we know that they're really a teke.

For meetings and things like that, there are other ways of telling like James said.

Cool

You could also intentionally feed them wrong information and see if they "catch" it.
For example, hypothetically, let's say your GLO's Founders' names were:
"Betty Blue, Margaret Mauve and Polly Pink".

You could say,
"How about our Founders, Betty Blue, Margaret Mauve and
Polly Purple."
and see if they catch the "mistake" or not....
If they are unfazed, you can probably safely bet that you've got an imposter.

We actually have an easy way of handling this - we don't exchange the handshake outside of a formal meeting in a chapter hall.

If they want to lie about their membership, they can knowck themselves out - right up to the point where they try to enter a meeting. Then, as James mentions, we have our ways of finding out.

Delt has a "challenge" which every initiated member is taught. If there is any question, we do not use "the grip" until the challenge is performed to our satisfaction. It includes words and actions.

One of my Pike buddies once told me that there is a particular greeting that Pi Kappa Alphas use in order to test someone who approaches a Pike and says that he is a brother. If the guy doesn't respond with a particular phrase, then the Pike knows that he is lying about his membership.

Ok, as you can see last night I had a posting problem at my sister-in-laws.

Anyways, from my experience usually there is a series of questions (open-ended) regarding things that only true betas would know. Usually in my chapter we only used the handshake during meetings and ritual. But then again it depends on the chapter. I have to agree with Hootie though because usually with almost anything most people give themselves away when their not telling the truth. You just know when your talking to the person with the kind of spirit they have. Most people that are not greek cannot relate to a lot of the issues we experience. Plus they cant understand the connection we feel with our fellow brotherhood or sisterhood.
