Unhappy Sad News

Hey ZTA's...
Yesterday, around noon, an Eta Kappa sister died in an automobile accident. She was coming home from the beach and was making a left turn. She did not see an oncoming car and died on impact. An emergency meeting was called last night so that exec could inform the chapter. Nationals also flew in for our meeting. The wake is tomorrow and the funeral is on Wednesday. Our whole chapter will be attending. We will also be dressing to pin for the next three day as a rememberance. Our chapter is in complete shock. I know that I got maybe an hour of sleep last night. We are all deeply saddened by this news. Let us be in your prayers tonight. ZLAM

I'm a Lambda Chi from UF who went to High School with her. She was a great girl and we are all missing her here as I'm sure you are there. May God be with us all in our loss and with her family especially.

Thank you all for your sympathy. I appreciate it.
Here is the full article from the St.Peterburg Times:

Driver killed in wreck on parkway
Beachgoers near the accident say the fatality proves the intersection needs a traffic light.

published March 18, 2002

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CLEARWATER -- A 19-year-old Palm Harbor woman was killed Sunday afternoon in a two-vehicle accident on the west end of the Courtney Campbell Parkway that slowed traffic to a crawl for several hours.

Laura Lamby was pulling out of the entrance to the beach area on the south side of the parkway at 12:25 p.m. when her Toyota Corolla was struck broadside by an eastbound Ford F-250 truck. The collision sent the Corolla spinning into the westbound lanes.

Beachgoers rushed to her car after the collision and tried opening the doors but were unable to do so, witnesses said. Pages of what appeared to be school papers from Lamby's car had scattered over the road.

Lamby was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, where she was pronounced dead. Clearwater police said Lamby drove into the path of the truck, which was driven by William Powledge of Lithia.

The accident shut down the westbound lanes of the parkway and eastbound traffic was reduced to a single lane as Clearwater police investigated the crash.

The collision sounded like a "thundering hit," said Luis Lopez, 25 of Tampa.

For those who frequent the beach on the southwest end of the parkway, the accident is further evidence the intersection needs a traffic light.

"On the weekends and holidays, this place is packed and there is no easy way in and out of here," said Pam Zientara, 50, of Zephyrhills, who goes to the beach two to three times a month.

Vehicles leaving the beach have to merge with cars on the parkway.

The lanes leading out of the beach area are covered with sand, sometimes causing tires to lose traction as drivers accelerate out of the intersection.

Florida Department of Transportation spokeswoman Marian Pscion said she thought the state had decided not to install a traffic light because the intersection did not meet the state's requirements for a signal.
